Analysis: Newspapers Should Embrace Online Aggregators

Many newspaper executives, most infamously Tribune acquirer Sam Zell, have made an enemy out of Google and other online aggregators who disintermediate newspapers and all other traditional media. This is of course a wrongheaded way to think about content on the Web, since these aggregators drive a significant amount of traffic to newspapers. But the real fear inherent in the distrust of aggregators is that they are destroying the direct brand relationships that newspapers and other branded media have traditionally had with their audience.

Scoopt Offers Flickr Users Revenue from Photo Syndication

Glasgow, Scotland - Scoopt, a citizen journalism picture agency, has offered users of photo-sharing site Flickr the ability to syndicate their photos for sale to news agencies through its service.

Reuters Invests $7 Million in Blog Syndication Network Pluck

New York - News syndication and wire service Reuters announced on Tuesday that it has made a $7 million investment and received an undisclosed stake in Pluck, an Austin-based provider of Web media syndication services. Pluck operates the BlogBurst syndication network, which provides supplemental content from over 2,800 blogs to newspapers and other news services including Reuters, The Washington Post and the Gannett newspaper chain. Pluck's SiteLife service also allows newspapers to add readers' photos and videos alongside stories on their websites.

Gannett Launches Video Distribution Business

McLean, Va. - Gannett, the publisher of USA Today and 89 other daily newspapers, said that it has launched a new business that will provide programming to other media for on-air, online and wireless distribution. The company said that Gannett Video Enterprises will take the best work from its 23 company-owned TV stations and customize it for use by other media organizations. Content will range from full 30- and 60-minute shows for broadcast and cable to 1-3 minute segments for online, on-demand and wireless technologies.

ClipSyndicate to Distribute Sinclair News Content Online

New York - ClipSyndicate, a unit of Critical Mention that provides online video syndication services, on Tuesday announced a deal with Sinclair Broadcast Group to distribute its news content. Sinclair's 58 stations reach 22% of U.S. households.

HarperCollins Publishers, iAmplify Launch Digital Media Cafe

New York - HarperCollins Publishers announced on Thursday that it has partnered with iAmplify to launch the Digital Media Cafe, a site where users can stream and download both free and paid programming to computers and portable media devices. The site is powered by New York-based iAmplify's syndication platform. Launch titles include works from the Caedmon collection, short stories by John Cleever read by celebrities including Meryl Streep, and short pieces from authors such as Neil Gaiman. HarperCollins said it ultimately plans to launch an original short-format publishing program.

MeeVee Syndicates Interactive TV Listings to Hearst Newspapers

Burlingame, Calif. - MeeVee, a developer of personalized video entertainment search technology, has expanded its syndication offering to include Hearst Newspapers. Visitors to the websites of the San Francisco Chronicle and Houston Chronicle can now view promo videos for TV shows, search local TV listings in real-time, and create personalized listings with custom recommendations. Burlingame, Calif.-based MeeVee said that additional Hearst publications will add its service later this year.

Fox Syndicates "Arrested Development" to MSN, HDNet, G4

Los Angeles - Fox Entertainment Group announced on Wednesday that it plans to syndicate all three seasons of its Emmy Award-winning comedy series "Arrested Development" online, as well as on pay-TV via HDNet and G4.
