China's Hurray Invests $3 Million in Taiwan's Seed Music

Beijing - Hurray (NASD: HRAY), a wireless music and content distributor, as well as artist development and music production firm based in China, announced on Wednesday that it has made a $3 million equity investment in Taiwan's Seed Music Group, an artist development, music production and offline distribution company.

Hong Kong - Authorities in Taiwan last week raided the operations of peer-to-peer website Hip2p.com on suspicion of offering pirated content -- the second such raid of its kind of a week in Taiwan -- Variety reported.

Taipei, Taiwan - Cite Publishers, a unit of Chinese Internet firm Tom Online, announced that it will invest $3.25 million to acquire a majority stake in Pixnet Digital Media, which operates the Pixnet blogging community in Taiwan, DigiTimes reported.

Taiwan Song-Swapping Service Kuro Agrees to Shut Down, Pay Damages

London - The recording industry's campaign against illicit file-sharing sites claimed another victory this week, as Taiwan-based Kuro agreed to shut down and pay the industry unspecified damages for copyright infringement. Kuro, which counted an estimated 500,000 registered users for its commercial, subscription-based download service, announced plans to re-launch as a legitimate service that will compensate copyright holders.

TiVo to Launch Digital Video Recorder Service in Taiwan

Alviso, Calif. - TiVo and TGC, its exclusive distribution partner in the China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Macao TV markets, announced on Tuesday that the first TiVo digital video recorders will soon go on sale in Taiwan. TiVo, which owns a significant minority interest in TGC, added that cable TV penetration in Taiwan is now over 80%. "TGC's launch in Taiwan is yet another step in our mission to expand the TiVo experience to high value, wired markets around the world," said TiVo CEO Tom Rogers.

Blizzard Launches "World of Warcraft" in Taiwan, Hong Kong

Irvine, Calif. - Blizzard Entertainment, a unit of Vivendi Universal Games, announced on Tuesday that its "World of Warcraft" massively multiplayer online roleplaying game has launched in the region of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. The online game will be hosted in the region by Soft-World and GFI. Irvine, Calif.-based Blizzard said that a beta test of the game in the region attracted 800,000 players, with a peak of 140,000 concurrent players. "World of Warcraft" currently counts 4.5 million subscribers worldwide.

Taiwan File-Sharing Site Kuro, Principals Get Copyright Convictions

London -- The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), a worldwide record label trade group, recently announced that Kuro, a Taiwan-based Internet file-sharing service, has been convicted of criminal copyright infringement. A fine of $90,000 was imposed, and three Kuro principals received prison terms of up to three years. A user convicted of uploading songs to the service also received a four month prison sentence. "This is good news for artists and the music industry, particularly in Taiwan which has had a history of piracy problems," said Lauri Rechardt, IFPI director of licensing and litigation. "Kuro has received a criminal conviction which sends a strong message that profiteering from infringement will not be tolerated." The IFPI has asked Kuro to either filter copyrighted songs off its file-sharing service or else shut down.

Microsoft to Launch Xbox Live in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore

Taipei -- Microsoft announced on Thursday that it will launch Xbox Live, the online gaming service for its Xbox video game console, in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore in April. The company has sold around 1.4 million Xbox consoles in the Asia-Pacific region, and also recently launched Xbox Live in South Korea -- the world's leader in broadband penetration. Xbox Asia general manager Alan Bowman told Reuters that the company has signed up 6,500 subscribers in Korea since launching on Oct. 30. "People can utilize their broadband connection at home, which is really a huge advantage for Asia, given that the penetration of broadband in homes throughout Asia is leading the world," Bowman told Reuters.

OpenTV Gets Nasdaq Delist Notice, Launches iTV Services in Taiwan

Mountain View, Calif. -- OpenTV, a provider of interactive TV software and services, announced on Tuesday that the Nasdaq has notified the company its shares may be delisted from the exchange. Mountain View, Calif.-based OpenTV will appeal the determination, which came as a result of its not having held an annual stockholder meeting in 2002 due to delays with its proposed merger with fellow iTV firm ACTV. Separately, OpenTV announced that it launched interactive TV services with Taiwanese cable TV operator Eastern Multimedia Ltd. The company said its iTV software has been deployed on over 27 million set-top boxes worldwide.
