Sony PlayStation Network Gets HD Films From 6 Major Studios

Foster City, Calif. - Sony Computer Entertainment America (NYSE: SNE) said on Tuesday that its PlayStation Network online service for the PlayStation 3 is now the first such service to offer HD movies from all six major Hollywood movie studios for purchase and rental. Following a U.S.-only launch, the films from Fox, Disney, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal and Warner Bros. are also expected to soon become available to PlayStation Network users in the U.K., France, Germany and Spain.

RealD Touts 3D TV Deals with Sony, Samsung, Others

Las Vegas - RealD, a developer of digital 3D technology, said on Thursday that it is working with Sony, JVC, Samsung, Toshiba, Panasonic and DirecTV to bring its stereoscopic RealD format to consumers' homes. The company will work with its partners to integrate 3D into HD televisions, and to develop both active and passive 3D glasses. RealD said that its format is compatible with the existing HD infrastructure, and can deliver 3D across cable, satellite, packaged media and the Internet.

Next3D to Debut Broadband 3D HD Video Service

Atlanta - Next3D, a developer of stereoscopic 3D technology, announced on Tuesday that it will introduce a broadband-delivered 3D, HD home video service in the first quarter of 2010. The Next3DTV service will offer content including theatrical 3D movies, films originally created for 3D IMAX theaters, trailers, sports, and live 3D weather maps. The service will initially be available for PCs that support 3D display technology.

Best Buy Backs Wireless Chipmaker SiBeam

YouTube to Launch 1080p HD Video Quality Next Week

San Francisco - Google's (NASD: GOOG) YouTube plans to introduce a new 1080p, full high-definition resolution option for viewing videos, as well as a new full-screen player next week, the company said at the NewTeeVee Live conference this week. The site's current maximum output is 720p. YouTube said it is currently re-encoding already submitted 1080p videos so they can be viewed in the higher-resolution format.

AEG Live, Action 3D to Produce HD 3D Concert Films

Los Angeles - Concert promoter and venue owner AEG Live has partnered with Action 3D to produce a series of HD 3D concerts that they plan to offer in theaters for limited, one-week releases, Variety reports. The first such engagement will be a Dave Matthews Band set from the Austin City Limits festival, which will show in 300-400 digital cinema screens from Dec. 11.

Apple Now Offers 250 HD Movie Titles on iTunes Store

New titles available for $19.99 include "Up," "WALL*E," "G.I. Joe," "Twilight," nine James Bond films and a pre-order for "Star Trek."

Roku Offers New HD Set-tops; Cuts Price of Base Model to $79

Saratoga, Calif. - Roku, a maker of Internet-connected set-top boxes, on Tuesday introduced two new HD-capable models, and new pricing for its standard model. The $99 Roku HD player and $129 Roku HD-XR support HD-quality video and audio, while the standard model Roku SD player will now sell for $79.The devices can deliver content directly from partners including Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand and MLB.TV.

Studio City, Calif. - Brilliant Digital Entertainment, the owner of the Kazaa file-sharing service, has announced plans to release a new video service that will allow users to upload and share standard and high-definition videos with the Kazaa community. The free service will include the ability to transfer HD video content to mobile phones, including the Palm Pre. After being sued by the record labels over its free peer-to-peer service, Kazaa launched a $19.98 per month unlimited music download service.

VUDU Video-on-Demand Service Offers HD Disney Movies

Microsoft to Release Zune HD Player in the Fall

Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) announced on Wednesday that it plans to release a new Zune HD portable media player in the fall, and will extend its Zune video service to the Xbox Live online game service for its Xbox 360 video game console. The Zune HD will feature a built-in HD Radio receiver, support for HD video output, an OLED touch-screen, Wi-Fi and an Internet browser.

Comcast Promoting Green Day Record With HD Videos

Philadelphia - Cable TV and broadband provider Comcast (NASD: CMCSA) announced on Wednesday that it is helping promote Green Day's forthcoming album by offering advance access to live performances of tracks off the new record on-demand. Ten live songs from a recent concert recorded in HD, as well as more than 30 of the band's videos and concerts, will be made available on Comcast's website. The company also produced a TV ad featuring the band performing the first single off the record.

Amazon Video On Demand Adds HD Movies, TV Shows

Seattle - Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) on Wednesday announced the availability of HD movies and TV episodes from its Amazon Video On Demand service. More than 500 titles are available for viewing either on a PC, or on television via set-tops or broadband-connected TVs from partners including TiVo, Roku, Sony and Panasonic. HD movie rentals cost between $3.99 and $4.99, while HD TV episodes are available for purchase for $2.99 each.

Amazon to Add $2.99 HD TV Show Episode Downloads

Seattle - Online retailer Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) plans to begin selling HD TV episode downloads for $2.99 per title, NewTeeVee reports. Rival iTunes sells HD TV episodes for $2.99 as well, and full seasons for $59.99; a full season in HD from Amazon would cost about $53. Although, as NewTeeVee noted, seasons of series like "Dexter" and "24" on Blu-ray sell for less than $50.

Los Angeles - Apple (NASD: AAPL) has begun selling and renting HD movies from its iTunes Store, with rentals priced at $4.99 and permanent downloads selling for $19.99. The initial lineup of titles includes "Transporter 3" and "Punisher: War Zone"; customers can also pre-order titles including "Twilight" and "Quantum of Solace."

Flickr Opens Video to All, Adds HD Video for Pro Accounts

San Francisco - Yahoo's (NASD: YHOO) online photo-sharing site Flickr has opened up the ability to upload video to all users, a feature previously only available to Pro account subscribers. The site will now also allow Pro accountholders, who pay $25 annually, to upload HD video to Flickr -- although all of the site's 35 million members are still limited to uploading videos no longer than 90 seconds, and no larger than 150MB.

Vudu Offers HD Movies for Purchase and Download

Santa Clara, Calif. - Vudu, the provider of a set-top box-based Internet video-on-demand service, announced on Tuesday that it now offers high-definition films for purchase and permanent download. Previously, Vudu had offered its library of over 1,400 HD movies only for rent; about 50 of these are now also available for outright purchase, for between $13.99 and $23.99.

CBS to Offer HD Video Player for NCAA March Madness

Lauderdale, Fla. - CBS-owned (NYSE: CBS) CBSSports.com and the NCAA said on Tuesday that they will offer a new, high-definition video player for CBS' NCAA March Madness on Demand free live webcasting service. Microsoft's (NASD: MSFT) Silverlight video platform will power the new video system, which is said to deliver up to 1.5 Mbps connections, up from the standard player's 550 Kbps speed.
