Flash Memory, MP3 Player Firm SanDisk to Cut 250 Jobs

Milpitas, Calif. - Needing to cut costs to combat falling prices for its components, SanDisk, a maker of flash storage card products, said on Friday that it will cut 250 jobs -- or about 10% of its workforce -- and reduce the salaries of its executives by as much as 20%.

Espoo, Finland - Nokia announced on Thursday the release of the film "Mission: Impossible III" on memory cards compatible with its Nokia Nseries multimedia computers. The 512MB card, which runs the full-length movie at 25 frames per second, will ship at no extra charge with the Nokia N93, a device with a 2.4-inch screen.

SanDisk Gets U.S. Regulatory Clearance to Acquire Msystems

Milpitas, Calif. - SanDisk, a maker of flash memory data storage cards used in MP3 players, mobile phones and other devices, said on Wednesday that it has received U.S. regulatory clearance to complete its $1.3 billion acquisition of Israel's msystems. The company said that the waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976 has expired, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued a no action letter. The deal still must be approved by msystems' shareholders and Israeli courts before closing. The deal, first announced in last July, would unite a pair of flash memory pioneers with complementary products, customers and channels. Msystems specializes in flash memory systems for the mobile, portable and embedded markets.

Samsung Develops 32GB, 64GB Flash Memory Cards

Seoul, Korea - Korean consumer electronics firm Samsung has introduced a new 32GB flash memory card, which can be doubled to 64GB and provide storage capacity for up to 40 movies or 16,000 songs in portable media players, cell phones and other devices. Samsung did not provide release date details for the new flash memory technology. Yesterday, Apple introduced a new iPod nano that utilizes an 8GB flash card, currently the largest flash memory capacity that is widely available for inclusion in mass produced electronics devices.

Sony Introduces $249 PSP Bundle with Memory Stick, UMD Movie

Foster City, Calif. - Sony Computer Entertainment America announced on Tuesday a new $249 bundle for its PSP handheld game system, which includes a 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo, a copy of the film "Lords of Dogtown" on UMD, and the game "ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails." The PSP Entertainment Pack will ship to retailers tomorrow.

SanDisk to Team With Toshiba on New $5 Billion Japanese Plant

Milpitas, Calif. - Japanese electronics giant Toshiba said on Friday that it will team with Milpitas, Calif.-based SanDisk to build a new $5.2 billion flash memory plant in Japan. The companies have jointly operated a Japanese plant for the past year, but said that rapid growth in the flash memory market from the proliferation of products such as MP3 music players and mobile phones has necessitated a larger facility. The new facility, to be known as Fab 4, is expected to be operational by late 2007, with an initial capacity of 2,500 wafers a month. By late 2008, the companies said that the plant will be able to produce 67,500 wafers a month.

Memory Card Maker SanDisk Prices $1 Billion Notes Offering

Sunnyvale, Calif. - SanDisk, a maker of flash memory data storage products, said on Wednesday that it has priced its $1 billion notes offering, which the company first announced earlier this week. The senior notes, due in 2013, will be convertible at a rate of about 12.1 shares for every $1,000 principal amount. The company said that it will use a portion of the proceeds for capital expenditures, including new and existing manufacturing facilities, as well as the development of new technologies. Sunnyvale, Calif.-based SanDisk makes memory cards used in portable media players, and also manufactures its own line of MP3 players.

Rolling Stones Album to be Released on New SanDisk Secure Memory Card

San Francisco - SanDisk, a maker of flash memory-based storage media, announced that it has developed a new TrustedFlash card that incorporates anti-piracy technology developed by NDS, a unit of News Corp. The mobile digital rights management technology will be used to secure movies, music and games embedded on the cards, which will be used in cell phones, portable digital players and other devices. IDC reports over 87 million phones with memory cards were sold in 2004 and forecasts 164 million will be sold this year. Sunnyvale, Calif.-based SanDisk said the first title released using the new technology will be the Rolling Stones' album "A Bigger Bang." The album will be sold on 256MB Gruvi Music cards featuring TrustedFlash for $39.95 starting in November; the card will also contain locked versions of other Rolling Stones albums that may be unlocked through a PC or mobile phone.

Infineon to Provide Memory, Chips for Microsoft's Xbox 360

Munich, Germany -- Infineon Technologies, a German manufacturer of semiconductors and storage memory cards, announced on Tuesday that it has been chosen to provide a removable memory card, advanced security chip, and wireless game controller chip for Microsoft's Xbox 360 video game console. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The chips were developed in Germany, Israel and Italy and will be manufactured in France for inclusion in the Xbox 360, which goes on sale in the fall.
