Tokyo - Japanese electronics firm Toshiba has introduced a new 1.8-inch, 100GB miniature hard drive for use in consumer electronics devices, which it says is the largest capacity yet achieved in this class of hard drives. Toshiba plans to begin mass production of the hard drives next month. The company is a major supplier of such miniature hard drives for Apple's iPod players, prompting speculation that a 100GB-capacity iPod is on the horizon.

The company also said that it has now registered more than 500,000 users in its first seven months. Aaron Levie, the CEO of Box.net, said that the new capital will allow his company to expand its service and enter new markets. In addition to providing simple online storage, Palo Alto, Calif.-based Box.net's platform allows users to upload, access, share and collaborate on their files within third-party applications and devices.

Denver - French consumer electronics firm Archos has introduced the first portable video player to offer a 160GB hard drive. The $599 Archos 504 features a 4.3-inch screen and can hold up to 155 DVD-quality movies, 95,000 songs or 1.6 million photos. The company also offers a 40GB version of the 504 for $349, and an 80GB model for $399.

London - Universal Music Group/Island Records recording artists Keane will ship the first single to be released on USB flash drives, the BBC Online reported. The U.K. band will sell 1,500 512MB flash drives containing MP3 copies of its song "Nothing In My Way" later this month for about $7.50. "We're definitely testing the waters," Island Records general manager Jon Turner told the BBC. The single is not the first USB drive release, however, as Canada's Barenaked Ladies offered an album on a USB drive last year.

Milpitas, Calif. - SanDisk, a maker of flash memory data storage cards used in MP3 players, mobile phones and other devices, said on Wednesday that it has received U.S. regulatory clearance to complete its $1.3 billion acquisition of Israel's msystems. The company said that the waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976 has expired, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued a no action letter. The deal still must be approved by msystems' shareholders and Israeli courts before closing. The deal, first announced in last July, would unite a pair of flash memory pioneers with complementary products, customers and channels. Msystems specializes in flash memory systems for the mobile, portable and embedded markets.

Milpitas, Calif. - Japanese electronics giant Toshiba said on Friday that it will team with Milpitas, Calif.-based SanDisk to build a new $5.2 billion flash memory plant in Japan. The companies have jointly operated a Japanese plant for the past year, but said that rapid growth in the flash memory market from the proliferation of products such as MP3 music players and mobile phones has necessitated a larger facility. The new facility, to be known as Fab 4, is expected to be operational by late 2007, with an initial capacity of 2,500 wafers a month. By late 2008, the companies said that the plant will be able to produce 67,500 wafers a month.

Sunnyvale, Calif. - SanDisk, a maker of flash memory data storage products, said on Wednesday that it has priced its $1 billion notes offering, which the company first announced earlier this week. The senior notes, due in 2013, will be convertible at a rate of about 12.1 shares for every $1,000 principal amount. The company said that it will use a portion of the proceeds for capital expenditures, including new and existing manufacturing facilities, as well as the development of new technologies. Sunnyvale, Calif.-based SanDisk makes memory cards used in portable media players, and also manufactures its own line of MP3 players.
