Maybe you’ve heard the word WiMAX of late? It’s made the rounds at nearly every technology conference this year, so one would think it’s the wave of the future. Or not. According to Len Lauer, Qualcomm’s EVP and group president, WiMAX is still no match for cellular networks, which provide equal bandwidth and are easier to deploy, GigaOM reported from the Wireless Innovations Conference. This despite Qualcomm’s recent acquisition of TeleCIS’s mobile WiMAX platform. But what is WiMAX anyway? It sounds like super-juiced WiFi, but apparently that’s incorrect as well. So what do you, dear DMW reader, know about WiMAX? Is it the future? Is it over-hyped? Give us your thoughts…

Las Vegas - Nokia's new N800 Internet Tablet, unveiled yesterday at the International CES, is a beautiful little device that packs quite a lot of punch, and stylishly so, into a small machine (only 7.27 ounces). The high resolution widescreen color display (800x480 pixels) is large enough to be easy on the eyes, and for $400 it offers nearly everything you'd get from a laptop, making it a worthwhile investment. There's also a handy camera that pops out from the upper left corner, making video conferencing on-the-go a breeze. Conveniently for your thumbs, and for the sake of efficiency, a full screen finger keyboard is available by rubbing your thumb over the screen.

Analysis: Zune Is Taking Shape As Social Networking GadgetAuthored by Jay Baage on August 25, 2006 - 8:31am.
UPDATED. As new details about Microsoft’s iPod challenger Zune pop up in FCC filings, it is clear that its competitive advantage is in allowing users to create mobile social networks and stream music to nearby friends or strangers. However, it seems we will indeed have to wait for a Zune player that will let you download and buy the music you want on the go. You will still have to connect this version of it to a PC to do that. But the wireless DJ function and the ability to beam photos between devices are still great.

FCC to Auction Spectrum for In-Flight Wireless Internet, VoIPAuthored by dmw on May 12, 2006 - 12:29pm.
New York - The FCC plans to auction frequencies that will be used to provide in-flight Internet services, The New York Times reported. Some foreign airlines, including Lufthansa and Japan Airlines, already offer flights with broadband for laptop-toting passengers, through a satellite-based service called Connexion from Boeing. Verizon Airfone, AirCell and LiveTV are among nine companies expected to bid on two available licenses, The Times reported, for spectrum borrowed from the seldom-used in-flight phone services available on many planes. The FCC licenses would allow equipment on planes to connect directly with receivers on the ground, with passengers paying a flat fee to both connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi, and potentially place phone calls using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology. "Airlines will have to be careful how they roll it out," Jonathan Schildkraut, a telecommunications analyst at Jefferies & Company, told The Times. "I don't trust people to observe the laws of propriety," he added, referring to the prospect of passengers being allowed to talk on the phone in an airplane's cramped quarters.
