Maybe you’ve heard the word WiMAX of late? It’s made the rounds at nearly every technology conference this year, so one would think it’s the wave of the future. Or not. According to Len Lauer, Qualcomm’s EVP and group president, WiMAX is still no match for cellular networks, which provide equal bandwidth and are easier to deploy, GigaOM reported from the Wireless Innovations Conference. This despite Qualcomm’s recent acquisition of TeleCIS’s mobile WiMAX platform. But what is WiMAX anyway? It sounds like super-juiced WiFi, but apparently that’s incorrect as well. Voce, self-proscribed “the world’s first premium wireless service,” arrives with a question mark: What, exactly, will the service do that I can’t find elsewhere? At first glance the answer lacks detail. “(Voce) combines outstanding coverage and advanced mobile devices with an unprecedented level of personalized attention and care,” says the company’s “About Us” page. That’s a big claim for an industry that constantly updates its products and offers plenty of “luxurious” alternatives (see: Apple’s iPhone, due in June).

Reston, Va. - Sprint Nextel, the Reston-based wireless giant, said on Monday that the Illinois Court of Appeals has granted a stay in its ongoing litigation with affiliate iPCS. The company said that it plans to continue operating its Nextel network throughout iPCS's territories for the foreseeable future. The territories include secondary markets in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska and a portion of Indiana. In August, the Cook County (Ill.) Circuit Court ruled that Sprint's merger with Nextel violated Sprint's affiliate agreement with iPCS. Now, Sprint Nextel is appealing that decision, and expects a verdict in seven to nine months.

Seattle - Shareholders have approved digital music service provider Loudeye's $60 million buyout by cell phone maker Nokia, the company said in a regulatory filing. The deal expected to close next week. Meanwhile, several law firms have announced the filing of shareholder class actions against Seattle-based Loudeye, alleging the company artificially inflated its stock price between May 2003 and November 2005. One lawsuit, from New Orleans-based law firm KGS, said the company during this time was "operating well below guidance… not successfully integrating its acquisitions," and that its "restructuring was failing." The company's share price fell from a high of $30 per share in late 2004 to less than $2 per share by the time Loudeye announced Nokia's intention to acquire the company.

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Tzero Technologies, a developer ultra wideband wireless video technology used in displays, set-top boxes, digital video recorders and other products, announced on Thursday that it has received an undisclosed strategic investment from Miven Venture Partners. Tzero said the investment is an extension of its $25.5 million second round of funding announced in June. The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company develops technology that can wirelessly connect high-definition video and audio devices, such as HDTVs, next-generation DVD players, set-top boxes and video game systems -- in place of a standard HDMI cable. Tzero said it will use the funds to expand business opportunities and bring new products to market.

London - A number of U.K. wireless carriers on Wednesday launched a technical trial of a mobile TV delivery technology called TDtv, the UMTS TD-CDMA-3GPP Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Services (MBMS) standard. The TDtv service allows carriers like trial participants 3UK, Orange, Telefonica and Vodafone to deliver multiple TV channels to an unlimited number of customers, as well as digital audio and multicasting services. The trial will deliver mobile TV programming from California-based MobiTV to 12 cell sites provided by IPWireless that cover part of Bristol, England.

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Ruckus Wireless, a developer of "smart Wi-Fi" technology and products, announced on Tuesday that it has raised $16 million in new financing, led by Motorola Ventures. New investors including T-Online Venture Fund and Firelake Capital Management also participated, along with existing investors Sequoia Capital, Sutter Hill Ventures, Investor AB and WK Technology Fund. Founded in 2004, Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Ruckus currently supplies its MediaFlex smart Wi-Fi system to more than 75 broadband providers. The technology lets providers remotely view and manage Wi-Fi networks in consumers' homes, so that services like IPTV can be accessed throughout the home without wires. The proceeds will be used to rapidly scale the company's production, operations and sales and marketing worldwide.
$2.37 Billion Bid by Cable TV Firms, Sprint Nextel Wins Wireless SpectrumAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on October 5, 2006 - 4:45pm.
Philadelphia - A joint venture called SpectrumCo that includes cable TV firms Comcast, Time Warner and Cox, and wireless carrier Sprint Nextel, announced on Thursday that its bid of $2.37 billion has won 137 wireless spectrum licenses in an FCC auction. The deal will eventually enable the cable TV firms to expand their bundled services -- which currently offer voice, Internet and TV offerings -- to include wireless phone service. The auction included spectrum that covers a national footprint and major U.S. cities including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. SpectrumCo, which bested bids from satellite firms DirecTV and EchoStar, said it has no finalized plans to build out the networks at this time. Of the $2.37 billion bid, Comcast contributed $1.29 billion, while Time Warner Cable paid $632.2 million and Cox provided $248.3 million.
