- Apple (NASD: AAPL) plans to introduce its previously announced variable pricing structure
for music at the iTunes Store on April 7, when new singles and popular tracks
have the option to be priced at $1.29, instead of the current industry standard
99 cents per song, the Los Angeles Times reported. The Times cited music
industry executives who said Apple has notified labels that is the date for the
launch.

Los Angeles - Txttunes, the provider of a text-message-based music distribution and social networking service, on Tuesday announced the launch of its offering in the U.S. The company also announced that Ted Cohen, formerly of EMI Music and now managing partner at Tag Strategic, has joined its advisory board. The Txttunes service lets labels and artists upload MP3s and ringtones to a website, which consumers can browse and select content to download to a PC or cell phone, with all charges billed directly to their mobile accounts. All DRM-free songs and ringtones cost $1.75, which includes a 75 cent "convenience fee." Txttunes launched with 60,000 tracks, and expects to triple its offering in the coming weeks. London - Major record label EMI Music has hired Barney Wragg as head of digital operations for EMI Music Worldwide. Wragg was formerly a senior vice president at eLabs, Universal Music Group's digital division, where he was responsible for the international operations of the unit. EMI recently saw the departures of two key digital executives, Ted Cohen and Adam Klein. Cohen, who left to launch a consulting firm, was the company's senior vice president of digital development and distribution, while Klein served as the company's executive vice president for strategy and business development. "We are very pleased that Barney is joining EMI to lead the next phase in the evolution of our digital strategy," said EMI chairman Alain Levy. "He is a highly experienced and respected digital music executive who will drive EMI Music's ongoing development in this exciting period of innovation and growth in the market."

Los Angeles - Ted Cohen today announced that he has resigned his position as senior vice president of digital development & distribution at major record label EMI Music to launch TAG Strategic, a digital media consultancy. Rounding out the partnership are streaming media veteran Gary Price, and Adrian Sexton, former VP of Digital Media at Lions Gate Entertainment, who also announced his resignation today.
