Documentary Site SnagFilms Launches, Acquires indieWIRE

Washington - Ted Leonsis, the vice chairman emeritus of AOL and a well-noted film buff, on Thursday launched his new documentary site, known as SnagFilms. The DC-based company, also backed by AOL co-founder Steve Case and venture capitalist Miles Gilburne, said that it aims to address the "bottleneck" in documentary distribution that "has left many great films unable to reach their potential audience or to provide a viable financial return."

Dulles, Va. - AOL vice chairman Ted Leonsis announced on Friday that New York-based ThinkFilm will be distributing Nanking -- the WWII documentary the produced -- theatrically in North America. "They have a stellar track record in working on important and Academy Award nominated or winning documentaries," Leonsis wrote on his blog. "They are passionate about this project."

Ted Leonsis To Step Down From Management Role At AOL

Dulles, Va. - Ted Leonsis, the vice chairman of AOL and president of its Audience business, announced that he will retire from a management role at the company on January 1. Leonsis will remain vice chairman of the company, after stepping down from day-to-day management roles. Leonsis joined AOL in 1993, following the acquisition of Redgate Communications, one of the first new media marketing companies.
