Washington - The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Thursday initiated a rule-making process intended to "codify and supplement existing Internet openness principles." The most contentious of these guidelines relates to "Net neutrality," which would oblige ISPs not to give preference to the Internet traffic of one company or individual over another.

AT&T to Allow VoIP Applications on its 3G Network

Dallas - AT&T (NYSE: T) announced on Tuesday that it has "taken the steps necessary so that Apple (NASD: AAPL) can enable VoIP application on iPhone to run on AT&T's wireless network." Previously, such applications were only enabled for use over Wi-Fi connections. The move will allow Internet-based phone services like Skype, and potentially Google Voice (NASD: GOOG), to work on the iPhone over AT&T's 3G network.

Los Angeles - AT&T (NYSE: T) has activated multimedia messaging (MMS) for Apple (NASD: AAPL) iPhone owners in the U.S. The service has been available since June for iPhone owners in other countries. U.S. subscribers received a text message notifying them of the new feature, which is commonplace on other smartphones.

AT&T Debuts Entertainment Site with Free TV Shows, Movies

Dallas - AT&T (NYSE: T) on Thursday announced the launch of AT&T Entertainment, a new Hulu-like website that offers thousands of streaming TV shows and movies from partners including ABC (NYSE: DIS), NBC Universal (NYSE: GE) and (NYSE: CBS)CBS. The free site is available to all consumers, not just subscribers to AT&T services. The company said it plans to add more programming from additional providers in the coming months.

AT&T to Double 3G Network Speed in L.A., 5 Other Cities

Dallas - AT&T (NYSE: T) on Wednesday announced plans to double the speed of its 3G wireless network in six major cities this year, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Miami and Charlotte. The company plans to deploy the speed-boosting HSPA 7.2 technology in 25 of the top 30 U.S. markets by the end of 2010, and across 90% of its existing 3G network footprint by the end of 2011.

AT&T to Enable MMS on iPhone From Sept. 25

Dallas - AT&T (NYSE: T) will active multimedia messaging (MMS) for its subscribers who own Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone on Sept. 25. The feature, which will allow iPhone owners to send and receive photos and other multimedia data, was originally announced back in June. "We've been working for months to prepare for this launch," the company said. "We have enabled equipment in our data centers across the country to process iPhone MMS signaling, and we've worked at cell sites across the country to ensure that we're ready to carry the expected record volumes of iPhone MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One."

TiVo Sues AT&T, Verizon for Infringing Its DVR Patents

Alviso, Calif. - Following a $105 million victory in a still ongoing patent infringement dispute with DISH Network owner EchoStar (NASD: SATS), TiVo (NASD: TIVO) on Wednesday filed additional claims against AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ), alleging the companies are violating its digital video recorder patents.

Sony Debuts $399 'Daily' Touch-Screen E-book Reader

New York - Sony (NYSE: SNE) on Tuesday introduced a new e-book reader device, the Reader Daily Edition, which will sport a touch-screen display and 3G wireless Internet access through AT&T when it goes on sale in December for $399. That price point will make the Daily $100 more expensive than rival Amazon's new Kindle 2 e-book reader.

Apple Explains Google Voice Application 'Rejection' to FCC

Washington - Apple (NASD: AAPL) told the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which is investigating the company's rejection of a Google (NASD: GOOG) Voice application for the iPhone, that it has not yet in fact rejected the app, but believes that Google Voice "alter[s]the iPhone's distinctive user experience by replacing the iPhone's core mobile telephone functionality and Apple user interface with its own user interface for telephone calls, text messaging and voicemail." Google Voice allows a user to set a single phone number to handle all calls, and redirects them to home, office or mobile lines; it also provides cheap long distance rates, and free SMS messaging.

FCC Probing Apple's Rejection of Google Voice iPhone App

Washington - The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is investigating why Apple rejected the Google Voice application from its App Store for the iPhone, as well as what role if any carrier partner AT&T had in the decision. In letters sent to Apple (NASD: AAPL), AT&T (NYSE: T) and Google (NASD: GOOG), the FCC has also asked which third-party applications that supported Google Voice were additionally removed from the store by Apple.

Qualcomm Mobile TV Going Direct-to-Consumer, Cutting Prices

San Diego - In a move to cut prices for consumers, Qualcomm (NASD: QCOM) plans to begin offering its FLO TV mobile TV service direct to consumers later this year, The New York Times' Bits blog reports. FLO TV, which offers live streams of some 20 TV channels, is currently offered through carriers including AT&T and Verizon. The carriers charge about $15 a month for the service, which Qualcomm told The Times is too expensive. Qualcomm hopes to offer annual subscriptions that work out to under $10 per month, along with $5 one-day passes, and $10 month-to-month subscriptions.
