San Francisco - Nearly 8 million U.S. mobile subscribers -- or 3% of the market -- are now using their phones to capture video, a figure that jumps to 6% among subscribers who recently purchased a new handset, according to a report from market research firm Telephia. "Google upped the ante this week by paying $1.65 billion for YouTube, validating the success and future potential of user-generated video content. The mobile phone is a unique and rich source of on-the-move, spontaneous, personal videos -- the kind that made YouTube a worldwide phenomenon to begin with," said Telephia's Kanishka Agarwal. Among recently purchased handsets, Americans favored the Motorola RAZR by nearly four to one over the next top device (the Nokia 6101) for capturing video. However, the U.S. with its 3% cell phone video adoption rate still lags behind European countries including Spain (15%), Italy (14%), the U.K. (12%) and Sweden (10%).

San Francisco - The mobile TV audience grew 45% to 3.7 million subscribers in the second quarter of 2006, with revenues up 67% over the first quarter, to $86 million, according to a report from market research firm Telephia. ABC News was the most-watched mobile TV channel during the second quarter, with 40% of the total audience, followed by The Weather Channel (32%); Fox Sports (31%); and ESPN (29%).
