McLean, Va. - USAToday.com said that its site traffic in July increased 20% from the prior year and 24% from June. The company said that its Simpson's Hometown online contest, held in partnership with 20th Century Fox's "The Simpson's Movie," was a major driver of reader traffic. The contest elicited a record number of reader comments on the site.

Sydney, Australia - The home of a Sydney man was raided by Australian police on Friday in connection with a copy of "The Simpsons Movie" that was leaked onto the Internet, the Associated Press reported.

In what may go down in history as one of the biggest integrated movie marketing efforts in the history of Hollywood, the pre-promotion for the upcoming Simpsons Movie is in full swing right now.  Unlike many other Hollywood promotions, the marketing for the Simpsons movies is going beyond billboard and print, beyond television, and beyond even interactive or viral.  This campaign has everything from creating your own animated avatar (that's mine on the left!) and having a chance to star in an upcoming episode, to winning the chance to get the premiere of the movie in your hometown (provided you live in one of 14 Springfields around the US).

The other day I blogged about a cool feature on The Simpsons Movie website that lets you create your own Simpsons avatar in preparation for the premiere of the movie on July 27th. Today I ran across another smart promotion - Several 7-Eleven stores in the US and Candada have been converted into Kwik-E-Marts - the Simpsons' convenience store of choice.

The much anticipated "The Simpsons Movie", which makes its worldwide debut in theatres on July 27, prides itself on being low-tech. It is being marketed as "ugly" and presented in "2D", according to the trailer embedded below. However, the marketing of the movie is certainly high-tech. For example, this website has all kinds of games and cool interactive features such as the ability to create your own Simpsons character. It is well worth a visit.
