Universal Music to Digitize Over 100,000 Out-of-Print European Tracks

New York - Major record label Universal Music Group said on Wednesday that it plans to digitize more than 100,000 out-of-print recordings from European artists, and sell them exclusively as digital song downloads. "Over the next three to four years, we aim to reissue perhaps as many as 10,000 albums for downloading, which amounts to more than 100,000 tracks," Barney Wragg, senior vice president of Universal Music Group International's eLabs division told Reuters. "This program will offer material that, in some cases, goes back to the early days of recorded music." The program will start with some 3,000 albums by British, French and German artists including Marianne Faithful and Brigitte Bardot.

"50 Cent: Bulletproof" In-Game Soundtrack to Feature 150 Tracks

Los Angeles - lVivendi Universal Games announced on Friday that the in-game soundtrack for its "50 Cent: Bulletproof" game will feature over 150 music tracks, including 13 unreleased and 100 instrumental tracks. Featured artists include 50 Cent and G Unit members Lloyd Banks, Young Buck and Tony Yayo, in addition to producer Sha Money XL, who will contribute exclusive remixes. The game is due for release on Nov. 22 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

eMusic Licenses TVT Records Tracks

New York - Digital music service eMusic announced that it has signed a licensing agreement to add tracks from independent label TVT Records to its service. Songs from TVT artists including Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz, Ying Yang Twins, Sevendust and Ambulance LTD will now be offered on eMusic, which sells over 2 million tracks each month.

MusicNet Expands Catalog to 2 Million Tracks

New York - MusicNet, a digital music service provider launched by AOL, RealNetworks and the major labels -- which is now owned by Baker Capital -- announced on Tuesday that it has expanded its catalog of licensed music to 2 million tracks. New York-based MusicNet distributes its tracks through partners including Yahoo, HMV, Virgin Digital, AOL, iMesh, Cdigiz, Charter, RCN and Adelphia.

Apple: U.K., French, German iTunes Stores Sell 800,000 Tracks in First Week

Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple announced on Wednesday that its new iTunes Music Stores in the U.K., France and Germany sold a combined 800,000 songs in their first week of operations. "After selling over 800,000 songs during its first week, iTunes is Europe's top online music store," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "In the U.K. alone, iTunes sold more than 450,000 songs in the last week -- 16 times as many as OD2, its closest competitor." OD2 (On Demand Distribution), the digital music firm co-founded by musician Peter Gabriel that distributes tracks for European digital retailers including HMV, Virgin, MSN and Tiscali, was acquired on Tuesday by Seattle-based Loudeye Technologies. Napster, which launched in the U.K. on May 20, has not yet released sales figures for its U.K. store.
