For the 4 weeks ending 27/09/08, one in every 50 UK Internet searches was for the single term ‘facebook’.

Analysis: Today's Launch of Wii Fit - Another Win For "Off-Couch" Gaming?

Authored by Jay Baage on May 19, 2008 - 5:34am.

Today, May 19th, is the official launch for the much talked about Nintendo Wii Fit. It’s been a big success in Japan, but is American ready to leave the couch and embrace so called "exergaming"? I think the answer is both yes and no. The Nintendo Wii’s groundbreaking controllers pioneered a new wave of what I call “off-couch” gaming and the success of video games such as “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” has solidified that trend on other game consoles. But just how much fun the the Wii Fit?

Mark Cuban: The Album is Dead...

Authored by Mark Cuban on January 18, 2008 - 11:10am.

There once was a time when the release date of an album was exciting. For our favorite artists we knew when the last album came out and when the next album was due. If you loved the artist you bought it. If you didn't you either bought the single or you listened to the album with your friends and then decided. As the price of records and then CDs increased year by year, spending 20 bucks for a CD became a purchase you needed to be sure of rather than a no brainer or impulse buy.

It Won't Stay in Vegas (Especially If You're A Blogger)

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on January 9, 2008 - 10:37am.

CES 2008 - What happens in Vegas this week won't stay here for too long. If you have been watching or reading any media at all this week, you have seen all the rampant coverage of everything from CES. Being here at the epicenter of the hype has been an interesting experience. Think of it as a cross between a museum exhibit of never before seen artwork, and walking past storefront display windows on 5th Avenue.

Analysis: Facebook's Dip Over The Last Two Months Is Seasonal

Authored by Bill Tancer on October 18, 2007 - 7:58am.

I've seen several posts circulating in the blogosphere postulating on the demise of Facebook given a drop in the sites traffic over August and September of this year. My immediate reaction was to turn to Hitwise data and provide a little more granularity to provide insight to the question of Facebook slowdown v. seasonality (my hypothesis on the recent drop in traffic).

Guy Kawasaki: Starting to Twitter

Authored by Guy Kawasaki on August 28, 2007 - 9:56am.
God help me, I’m going to start Twittering. Dave Winer and Laura Fitton convinced me to take the leap, so it’s their fault. This all started because I spoke at Gnomdex. Here’s my Twitter info. Now you can see how boring my life is. :-)

Mark Cuban: The Internet is Dead and Boring

Authored by Mark Cuban on August 26, 2007 - 10:40am.
A lot of people are all up and upset about my comments that the Internet is dead and boring. Well guess what, it is. Every new technological, mechanical or intellectual breakthrough has its day, days, months and years. But they don't rule forever. That's the reality. Every generation has its defining breakthrough. Cars, TV, Radio, Planes, highways, the wheel, the printing press, the list goes on forever. I'm sure in each generation to whom the invention was a breakthrough it may have been heretical to consider those inventions "dead and boring". The reality is that at some point they stop changing. They stop evolving. They become utilities or utilitarian and are taken for granted.

Mark Cuban: Congrats Barry Bonds

Authored by Mark Cuban on August 7, 2007 - 2:16am.
You did it. Not only did you tie the record, but you have done it on your own terms. No amount of discussion can minimize how difficult that must have been for him No disrespect to Hammering Hank. I remember exactly where I was April 8Th 1974. Hank Aaron had the mountains of his generation to climb to pass Babe Ruth. He took on segregation, integration and prejudice to pass Babe Ruth. There is not an accomplishment in sport that can reduce the importance of what Mr Aaron accomplished. He will always be revered.

Guy Kawasaki: Now You Can "Rule the Web"

Authored by Guy Kawasaki on July 19, 2007 - 1:05am.

Would you like to rule the web? Mark Frauenfelder’s new book will help you do exactly that. I thought I knew about most of the cool stuff on the web, but thirty pages into this book it was clear to me that I was deluding myself. Mark is the founding editor of BoingBoing.net and editor in chief of Make. His book is called Rule the Web. Here are ten things that I learned about by reading it. I am sure you will discover many useful and cool tips in this book. He’s got a blog to keep up to date too.

A First Look at YouTube's New In-Video Ads

Authored by Jay Baage on July 10, 2007 - 6:34am.
YouTube has initiated testing of a new kind of in-video advertising. The video that I embedded in this article was uploaded by a Youtube user who spotted it and actually thought it was kind of "cool", which is a good first review, I guess. And it does indeed seem un-intrusive and user-friendly. As Stefan Kolle notes, it seems to avoid the problem that many pre-roll ads have - if you watch a couple of videos in a row, you get the same ad over and over again, which can get pretty annoying.

Analysis: MSNBC Skips Social News Trend, Focuses on Visual News

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on June 28, 2007 - 1:47pm.

I2m_msnbc_newsbreaker_3Standing out for your online news offering is rapidly becoming almost impossible for publishers.  After all, as we each get smarter about using RSS feeds to only get the content we want, the old "news portal" sites of several years ago are becoming less and less important.

Guy Kawasaki: Want to be inspired?

The Midbutton and Other Reasons To Think Small

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on June 21, 2007 - 10:31am.

I don't wear ties.  It's not so much a rule as it is a preferred statement - learned over being in the interactive industry for more than ten years.  Instead, I often wear button down shirts, which leads me to the most serious of all wardrobe questions that men around the world deal with on a nearly daily basis ... how many buttons do you leave unbuttoned?

Buzz Watch: Coca-Cola and the Future of (Robot) Marketing?

Authored by Jay Baage on June 18, 2007 - 6:43pm.
Coca-Cola has a new promotion in Tokyo featuring a giant robotic Coke machine know as “Vending Machine Red” that is making appearances around town, according to Laughing Squid. As part of the campaign, Coke has created an awesome series of Vending Machine Red commercials. What I like is that they are done in the style of a 1960’s Japanese Tokusatsu live-action television show and it doesn't matter if you speak Japanese or not. You get it. Check it out. I want to buy a coke from this machine.

Learning Marketing From The Drum Solo

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on June 18, 2007 - 10:57am.
Last night I saw a drum solo as part of the A.R. Rahman concert here in DC.  For those who don't know, A.R. Rahman is as close as any modern day man can get to being a god in India.  He is the music composer (and sometimes voice) behind many of the most popular Bollywood films.  The concert presented an evening of his music from many films and was hugely popular here in DC - with people lining up outside and dancing in the aisles throughout the show.

Analysis: Business 2.0 vs. Valleywag

Authored by Scott Karp on June 15, 2007 - 10:28am.

Business 2.0 has had another trend defining staff departure, following the departure of blogger Om Malik last year to launch his own media company. Now, the news is that Business 2.0 editor Owen Thomas will be the new editor of Valleywag, the tech gossip blog run by gossip monger Nick Denton (picture). What I find interesting about this news is how it reflects the evolution of magazine media — particularly the staffing model.

Analysis: Gossip Blog Traffic Spikes as Paris Hilton Goes to Jail

Authored by LeeAnn Prescott on June 14, 2007 - 1:56pm.

Paris Hilton entered jail on June 3 for violating her probation in a drunk-driving case. In true Paris fashion, she managed to make headlines even in jail, by going home for supposed medical reasons, re-entering jail, and talking to Barbara Walters about her newfound maturity. The gossip blogs, of course were flooded with commentary, rumors, and speculation about Paris' jail stay, as was the major news media. US traffic to TMZ and Hollywood Tuna was up 60% and 85% respectively, making this the third highest traffic week in celebrity news in the past year, after Anna Nicole Smith's death and Britney Spears' lack of wardrobe malfunctions.
