RealNetworks Buys Trymedia from Macrovision for $4 Million

Seattle - RealNetworks (NASD: RNWK) announced on Friday that it has acquired Trymedia Systems, a provider of digital distribution services for casual games, from Macrovision (NASD: MVSN) for $4 million.

San Francisco - Macrovision, a provider of copy-protection and digital game distribution technologies, said on Friday that its San Francisco-based Trymedia Games division has partnered with San Francisco in-game advertising firm Double Fusion to launch a new in-game ad service.

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Macrovision, a developer of copy-protection technologies for DVD, VHS, CD and other media, announced on Tuesday that it will acquire Trymedia Systems, a provider of secure downloadable PC games, for $34 million in cash. In conjunction with the acquisition, Macrovision said it will incorporate San Francisco-based Trymedia into a new business unit that will provide video game publishers with tools to secure, distribute, promote and continuously renew their game titles. Santa Clara, Calif.-based Macrovision said the deal will add secure game distribution to the DVD and VHS movie protection it provides to Hollywood studios, and the CD copy-protection technology it offers major record labels.

San Francisco -- Trymedia Systems, a provider of secure software and video game distribution technology, announced on Wednesday that it has raised an undisclosed amount of funding in its second round, which was led by the Intel Digital Home Fund. San Francisco-based Trymedia said that currently over 3,000 portals, websites and peer-to-peer networks offer its catalog of protected games and software titles to consumers. "The investment from the Intel Digital Home Fund and others comes at a time when piracy and file-sharing issues have raised awareness for secure distribution solutions to an all-time high," said Trymedia co-founder and CEO Alex Torrubia. "We plan to use these resources to help meet the explosive increase in demand for our solution by developing new verticals and territories."
