Universal to Debut New Interactive Blu-ray Features

Universal City, Calif. - Universal Studios Home Entertainment announced on Tuesday that several of its upcoming Blu-ray releases will include new interactive features, including social networking and mobile applications for the iPhone. The pocket BLU app connects a user's iPhone via Wi-Fi to a network-connected Blu-ray player, and can become an advanced remote control; provide a video timeline; function as a keyboard for Blu-ray chat and messaging; and unlock exclusive mobile bonus content. The social BLU technology will allow users to send Facebook and Twitter status updates from their Blu-ray player, and in the future let users share film-related user-generated content. The new features will be available on forthcoming Blu-ray editions of films including "Bruno," "Funny People" and "Inglorious Basterds."

Bruce Lee Enterprises Debuts Website; Seeks License Deals

Los Angeles - After reacquiring merchandising rights from Universal Studios, Shannon Lee, the daughter of martial arts legend Bruce Lee and CEO of Bruce Lee Enterprises and LeeWay Media has launched a new website and is engaged in licensing name and likeness rights, and creating original film and television productions. Projects in development include a Chinese-language biopic; an animation project with Waddell Media and Flickerpix; a CG action film; and a Broadway musical.

Redbox Antitrust Lawsuit Against Universal to Proceed

Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. - Redbox, a unit of Coinstar (NASD: CSTR) that operates a network of DVD rental kiosks, said on Tuesday that a federal court has allowed its antitrust lawsuit against Universal Studios Home Entertainment (NYSE: GE) to proceed, denying the studio's motion to dismiss. "The Federal Court's decision marks an important step forward in our effort to protect consumers' right to convenient, affordable access to new release DVDs at redbox locations nationwide," said Redbox president Mitch Lowe.

Studios Sue Pirate Bay, Demand Shutdown of File-Sharing Hub

Stockholm, Sweden - A coalition of Hollywood movie studios, including Disney (NYSE: DIS), Universal, Warner Bros. (NYSE: TWX), Columbia, Sony (NYSE: SNE), NBC (NYSE: GE) and Viacom's (NYSE: VIA) Paramount, have filed suit in Sweden, asking a court to shutter file-sharing hub The Pirate Bay. The four operators of The Pirate Bay have already been found guilty of copyright infringement and sentenced to jail time and fines; that ruling has been appealed.

Universal to Add iPhone Control to Some Blu-ray Movies

Universal City, Calif. - Universal Studios Home Entertainment said on Monday that it plans to offer Apple (NASD: AAPL) iPhone and iPod touch-enabled features on a number of upcoming Blu-ray movie releases. The features, to be enabled via App Store applications, will let iPhone owners control interactive content within the films as they watch them. Users will also be able to access bonus Blu-ray content and download it to an iPhone or iPod touch for viewing on-the-go.

Coinstar Buys Rest of DVD Kiosk Firm Redbox for Up to $176M

Bellevue, Wash. - Coinstar (NASD: CSTR), the operator of a network of self-service coin counting and other machines in public places, announced that it will purchase the remaining stake in DVD rental kiosk firm Redbox that it does not already own, in a deal valued at up to $176 million.

Universal, Verbinski to Produce Movie Based on "Second Life"

Los Angeles - Universal Studios and director Gore Verbinski ("Pirates of the Caribbean," "The Ring") have acquired the rights to a 2007 Wall Street Journal article about the online virtual world "Second Life," Variety reports. The article centered on the detrimental effect that hours spent in the virtual world had on the real life of a 53-year-old man and his family. Verbinski is also slated to direct a film version of the game "Bioshock" for Universal.

Cupertino, Calif. - Apple (NASD: AAPL) on Thursday announced that new release movies from the major Hollywood studios will now be made available for purchase and download from the iTunes Store on the same day as their DVD releases, and will be priced at $14.99. Participating studios include 20th Century Fox (NYSE: NWS), The Walt Disney Studios (NYSE: DIS), Warner Bros. (NYSE: TWX), Paramount Pictures (NYSE: VIA), Universal Studios Home Entertainment (NYSE: GE), Sony Pictures Entertainment (NYSE: SNE), Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look Studios.

Los Angeles - Universal and Paramount (NYSE: VIA) have become the last of the major Hollywood movie studios to pledge support for Sony's (NYSE: SNE) Blu-ray next-generation DVD format, after Toshiba decided earlier this week to abandon its rival HD DVD format, ending a costly battle between the two companies to establish their respective format as the standard. "We are pleased that the industry is moving to a single high-definition format, as we believe it is in the best interest of the consumer," Paramount Home Entertainment told The Hollywood Reporter.

VUDU Adds HD Movies to VOD Set-top Box

Santa Clara, Calif. - VUDU, the developer of a set-top box that features on-demand movies licensed from the major studios and many independents, announced on Thursday that it has signed deals with Universal, Paramount and Lionsgate to add HD movies to its service. The HD films will be available to VUDU owners during the traditional home video and video-on-demand windows. Santa Clara, Calif.-based VUDU's Internet-connected set-top box went on sale last month for $399; consumers also pay fees to rent or permanently purchase titles from the rotating library of 5,000 films.

Palo Alto, Calif. - Internet TV developer Instant Media announced on Tuesday an agreement with Universal Studios Home Entertainment, which will allow users of its free I'M player to purchase and download Universal movies over the Internet. Palo Alto, Calif.-based Instant Media said its I'M player caches programming in order to provide glitch-free playback in full-screen resolution.

Los Angeles - Universal Studios announced on Thursday that it has partnered with mobile entertainment distributor I-play to launch a mobile video service offering clips from Universal's movie library. Launching later this year in North America, the Mobile Moments channel will include on-demand clips from films such as "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," "Animal House," "E.T." and "Sixteen Candles." I-play distributes mobile content through a network of over 120 carriers worldwide, including Sprint, Verizon and Cingular.

GOSUB 60 to Develop Mobile Games Featuring Curious George

Santa Monica, Calif. - Mobile entertainment publisher GOSUB 60 announced on Wednesday that it has signed an agreement with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group to develop Curious George mobile phone games. The first title under the multi-product, multi-year arrangement will be "Curious George's Day Out," set for release in October.
