AOL Unveils Several New Podcasting Offerings

Dulles, Va. -- America Online on Wednesday announced that it has integrated access to the Web's podcast content at a new portal. The company has launched its "Podcasting 101," which lets visitors subscribe to an assortment of popular podcasts. In addition, AOL Radio has launched a new station featuring a non-stop stream of podcasts, both from AOL and partners such as NPR flagship station KCRW, CNN, BBC and Gamespot.com. AOL's Winamp 5.1 media player now includes a new podcast directory, which allows users to download and subscribe to hundreds of podcasts. AOL also said that it plans to add enhanced podcast search abilities to its AOL Search tool this fall, through the integration of TVEyes' Podscope search engine. Separately, the AOL's RED service for teenagers announced the launch of a new online reality TV show, which will feature six college freshmen documenting their experiences, using a camcorder and daily blog. "Project Freshman," produced by 2C Media, will offer new episodes every Thursday.

Yahoo Unveils Mobile Search Service

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Looking to expand its wireless Internet offerings, Yahoo has unveiled a new search service specifically designed for mobile users. The service, which launched Wednesday on Yahoo's wireless Internet portal on several major carriers across the U.S., allows mobile users to search for local information, images and Web resources on an array of mobile devices. Users will have access to standard search engine features, as well as business listings with phone numbers and maps, professional and community generated ratings, thumbnails of more than a billion images, a search shortcuts page enabling quick access to information and a feature that allows users to place phone calls from the search results page. The search engine is just the latest Yahoo stable to go mobile over the past year. Others have included the company's instant messenger and photo service.

HP Unveils Branded Apple iPod, Other Digital Consumer Electronics

Miami -- PC maker HP on Friday unveiled a branded iPod digital music player as part of its new consumer digital electronics line that includes cameras and photo printers, home theater projectors and entertainment-based laptop and desktop PCs. In partnership with Apple, HP will sell a 20GB iPod for $299 and 40GB model for $399 -- the same price Apple charges -- and also offer "printable tattoo" water-resistant skins for the players that feature either album cover art or consumers' own personalized artwork or photos. HP is currently taking pre-orders for the branded iPods and will begin shipping them on Sept. 15.

Yahoo Unveils Enhanced Email Features

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Striking back at rival Google following the release of that company's free email service, Yahoo launched several new features on its own mail service, including a major increase in storage space for both free and premium users. Free email subscribers have been upgraded to 100-megabytes of storage, 25 times more than the prior free offering. Premium customers, including subscribers to SBC Yahoo Dial and DSL, will now have 2 gigabytes of storage, or twice as much as users of Google's Gmail. Yahoo also unveiled a new design and improved search capabilities, and removed graphical ads from its premium email services. In addition, the company said that it is opening up more than 50 million Yahoo IDs, giving consumers more address options for their email accounts.

Nokia Unveils New TV Cell Phone

Helsinki -- Nokia, the biggest mobile phone maker in the world, on Tuesday launched several new mobile handsets, including a model on which users can watch TV. In a statement, the company said that it expected to ship more than 100 million phones complete with color screens, Java software and improved messaging options next year. The company also announced plans to have at least 15 EDGE-enabled handsets on the market by 2004.

Apple Launches Digital Music Subscription Service, Unveils New iPods

Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple Computer on Monday launched its iTunes Music Store, the company's anticipated digital music subscription service. The service is available to Mac users as a free download, after which all 200,000 tracks from major labels BMG, EMI, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal and Warner may be purchased a la carte for $0.99 each. Thirty-second previews are available for the songs, which are encoded in Dolby's AAC audio format at 128 kbps and may be burned to an unlimited number of CDs and transferred unlimited times to the iPod, as well as used freely in other Apple applications like iMovie. Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple on Monday also introduced a new line of its iPod digital music players. The new designs are slimmer than previous models at .62 inches and weigh 5.6 ounces. A 10GB model costs $299, while a 15GB model sells for $399 and a new 3,500-song capacity, 30GB model is priced at $499.
