McLean, Va. - USA Today, the national newspaper published by Gannett (NYSE: GCI), said that it has launched a new electronic edition in partnership with Minnesota-based Tecnavia Press. The USA Today/NewsMemory e-Edition is an exact replica version of the paper, which also includes a Saturday-Sunday edition available only to digital subscribers. The companies also will bundle the edition with local and regional newspaper subscriptions in select markets, starting with Tampa, Fla. and St. Paul, Minn. Subscribers will receive both their local newspaper and USA Today as a digital edition.

McLean, Va. - Searching for ways to generate revenue amid the downturn in ad sales, Gannett's (NYSE: GCI) USA Today on Monday announced plans to launch a new e-edition -- a page-by-page exact replica of its daily paper delivered to subscribers' email accounts by 5:30 a.m. each morning. The service, to launch Aug. 3, also will feature additional interactive and exclusive content, as well as a Saturday-Sunday edition called USA Today Extra. Current subscribers of the paper will automatically receive the service, which also will be sold in digital format for $99 a year.

USA Today Adds Kindle Sales to Best-Selling Books List

McLean, Va. - USA Today, the national newspaper published by Gannett (NYSE: GCI), said that it has begun including sales of e-books purchased for the Amazon (NASD: AMZN) Kindle device in its weekly Best-Selling Books List. Susan Weiss, the managing editor of USA Today's Life section, said that the decision to expand the 15-year-old rankings "reflects the new platforms consumers and readers are using to purchase books." Rankings are based on retail sales data collected each week from about 7,000 physical retail outlets in addition to books sold online. The list ranks titles regardless of genre or format.

New York - Gannett's (NYSE: GCI) USA Today plans to introduce a new digital replica version in August that users will pay slightly less than a print edition to read, the Associated Press reports. New USA Today publisher David Hunke told AP that he doesn't envision charging for access to the paper's main website, but that it may seek to gain subscription revenue from mobile applications.

McLean, Va. - Gannett (NYSE: GCI), the publisher of 85 daily newspapers, on Tuesday named David Hunke as the new president and publisher of USA Today, which has the nation's largest print circulation at 2.1 million. Hunke, currently the CEO of the Detroit Media Partnership and publisher of the Detroit Free Press, succeeds Craig Moon, who retired on April 17. The company also named John Hillkirk as the new editor of USA Today, succeeding Ken Paulson, who left in February. Hillkirk is currently the paper's executive editor.

McLean, Va. - Gannett's USA Today, said on Tuesday that Craig Moon will retire as its president and publisher of the newspaper in mid-April. Moon, who has been with Gannett for more than 23 years, has spent the past six years in charge of USA Today, which is the top-selling newspaper in the U.S. He also supervises USA Weekend, the Detroit Media Partnership, Gannett Offset and the Military Times operation. Gannett has not yet named a replacement.

Visitors to USA Today's Website Increase 27% in February

McLean, Va. - Paced by its technology coverage, the web site of USA Today drew more than 13.4 million unique visitors in February, an increase of 27% from the prior year, according to new figures from Nielsen Online. It was the largest increase of any national newspaper. The site's largest audience growth came from its Tech section, which doubled its audience to 1.9 million visitors for the month. Some of the most viewed topics on the site included coverage of the economic stimulus package, the Octuplet Mom, and Rihanna.

USA Today Editor to Become President of Newseum

Washington - Kenneth Paulson, the editor and senior vice president of news of USA Today, will leave the McLean-based newspaper early next year to become the president and COO of Washington, DC's Newseum and its primary backer, the Freedom Forum. He will succeed Peter Prichard, who will work on special projects for a year before retiring. Prichard also served as the editor of USA Today before joining the Freedom Forum and Newseum 12 years ago. Paulson was named the editor of USA Today in 2004, and previously had served as executive director of the First Amendment Center and senior vice president of the Freedom Forum.

McLean, Va. - USA Today said on Monday that it has formed a multi-platform editorial content and marketing alliance with New York-based Fantasy Sports Ventures (FSV), the developer of an online network of fantasy sports websites. Under the deal, FSV's Fantasy Players Network will distribute USA Today's sports content through its sites, while the company's fantasy sports experts will provide information to the paper.

USA Today Integrates Headline Search Into AIM

McLean, Va. - USA Today said on Wednesday that it has launched a new tool that will let readers use AOL's AIM instant messenger to search current and archived headlines and set up news alerts. Once logged into AIM, users can add "USA TODAY" to their buddy lists. They can then type key words into the dialogue box, and receive a return IM when the paper publishes articles containing those words. Readers also can use the service to browse and search headlines.
