Publisher Gannett to Take Charge of Up to $3 Billion

McLean, Va. - Citing "tough economic challenges both domestically and in the U.K.," Gannett (NYSE: GCI), the publisher of USA Today and 84 other daily newspapers, said on Monday that it plans to record as much as $3 billion in impairment charges this quarter to reflect the company's dwindling value. Gannett said that the non-cash charges reflect "challenging business conditions" related to the softening real estate market, as well as a decline in its stock price.

USA Today, Fantasy Sports Ventures to Share Content

McLean, Va. - USA Today said on Monday that it has formed a multi-platform editorial content and marketing alliance with New York-based Fantasy Sports Ventures (FSV), the developer of an online network of fantasy sports websites. Under the deal, FSV's Fantasy Players Network will distribute USA Today's sports content through its sites, while the company's fantasy sports experts will provide information to the paper.

USA Today Integrates Headline Search Into AIM

McLean, Va. - USA Today said on Wednesday that it has launched a new tool that will let readers use AOL's AIM instant messenger to search current and archived headlines and set up news alerts. Once logged into AIM, users can add "USA TODAY" to their buddy lists. They can then type key words into the dialogue box, and receive a return IM when the paper publishes articles containing those words. Readers also can use the service to browse and search headlines.

The New York Times BuildingThe second largest shareholder of The New York Times, Morgan Stanley, sold its entire stake in the company today, according to Bloomberg.  The sale pummeled the stock, sending it to its lowest level in over 10 years.  Bloomberg cited a source who wished to remain unnamed, as Morgan Stanley hasn’t officially announced the sale.

USA Today Taps The Politico to Expand 2008 Election Coverage

McLean, Va. - Looking to expand its 2008 election coverage, USA Today said that it struck a content sharing deal with The Politico, a newly launched political newspaper and website founded by a pair of former Washington Post journalists. Under the deal, the paper will feature selected stories from The Politico in print and online. USA Today stories also will occasionally appear in the pages of The Politico and their website. USA Today recently launched its revamped political site, as well as a political blog.

McLean, Va. - USA Today said on Thursday that it has relaunched its USAToday.com website, adding more user-generated content, comments and recommendations. Ken Paulson, the editor of USA Today, said that the new site has been "recast for an era in which readers increasingly have the power to monitor many sources of information at once." Readers will now be able to contribute to the site in a variety of ways, including submitting comments on story pages, participating in forums on topics of special interest, uploading photos and authoring blogs.

McLean, Va. - USA Today said on Tuesday that it has partnered with Ohio-based MobileVoiceControl on a new service that will allow BlackBerry users to access USA Today's mobile content by pressing a button and verbalizing their request. Initially, the newspaper will provide updated national content in areas such as news, money, sports, life and weather. Eventually, local content from Gannett's 90 daily papers and 21 TV stations also will be available. The software is currently available on Sprint's PCS network.

USA Today: MobiTV Signs Up 500,000 Subscribers

Los Angeles - USA Today reported on Wednesday that MobiTV, a Berkeley, Calif.-based provider of a live streaming TV service for cell phones, now counts over 500,000 subscribers. Sprint and Cingular offer the $9.95 per month service to their subscribers, who can access up to 27 live TV feeds from providers including ABC and MSNBC, in addition to video feeds from ESPN, CNN, TLC, Fox Sports, MLB.com and Cartoon Network.
