Court Tosses Universal Music's Copyright Suit Against Veoh

Los Angeles - A federal court has dismissed a copyright infringement lawsuit brought by Universal Music Group against video-sharing site Veoh, finding that the company had satisfied all requirements under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The judge noted that "the record presented demonstrates that, far from encouraging copyright infringement, Veoh has a strong DMCA policy, takes active steps to limit incidents of infringement on its website and works diligently to keep unauthorized works off its website."

San Francisco - Video hosting site Veoh has prevailed in a copyright infringement suit filed against the company by Universal Music Group, with the court ruling that transcoding and other activities utilized in serving streaming video are covered under the "safe harbor" provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Universal sued Veoh over music videos uploaded to the site by users, arguing that the safe harbor that protects service providers from liability from copyright infringement committed by users of their services applies only to storing such material on a server.

San Diego - Video hosting site Veoh Networks, whose backers include former Disney CEO Michael Eisner's Tornante Company, has laid off 15-18 staff from its technical operations and engineering team in St. Petersburg, Russia, NewTeeVee reported.

San Francisco - A federal court has dismissed a copyright infringement claim against video-hosting site Veoh, saying that the company had done what was required under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to respect copyrights, Reuters reported. Adult entertainment company Io Group filed suit against Veoh when ten of its videos showed up on the site, but did not first file a takedown notice, as is stipulated under the DMCA. The company argued that Veoh should be responsible for reviewing all videos uploaded to its site before they become available for viewing.

Disney-ABC Inks Deal to Stream Full TV Episodes on Veoh

Los Angeles - Disney's (NYSE: DIS) ABC has signed a deal to offer full episodes of some of its primetime TV shows on Veoh, a video site backed by former Disney head Michael Eisner. Included will be episodes of "Lost," "Desperate Housewives," "Ugly Betty" and other programs, in addition to clips from Disney-owned sports network ESPN. Under the terms, Veoh will utilize ABC's own media player on its site, and pay Veoh based on the traffic it generates for ABC.com, according to PaidContent.

Warner Bros. TV Shows Coming to TiVo, Dailymotion, Other Sites

Burbank, Calif. - Warner Bros. Television Group (NYSE: TWX) announced on Thursday that it has signed deals to syndicate content from its new ad-supported TheWB.com and KidsWB.com broadband sites through video distributors Dailymotion, Joost, Sling Media, TiVo and Veoh. The partner channels are slated to launch in mid-September, and offer full-length episodes. The deals follow similar video syndication pacts with AOL and Facebook. Warner Bros. said it also plans to launch original series on TheWB.com, including "Sorority Forever," produced by McG and Big Fantastic.

San Diego - Video-sharing site Veoh Networks announced on Thursday that it will add content from FEARnet, a horror and thriller website and video-on-demand joint venture between Comcast, Lionsgate and Sony Pictures. The companies will share advertising revenue generated from a FEARnet channel on Veoh slated to launch next month, which will offer feature films, celebrity interviews and coverage from top horror conventions. FEARnet is also developing a slate of new original programming for 2008 that will be featured on Veoh.

San Francisco - A group of media and technology firms has worked out a set of guidelines for protecting copyrights on the Internet, that include using antipiracy technologies to remove infringing content, and block copyrighted materials from being uploaded before they are publicly accessible, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

Seattle - Pixsy, a provider of video search technology, said on Thursday that it will power the search function for video-sharing firm Veoh Networks. Seattle-based Pixsy monitors the latest images and videos from RSS feeds, which are then made searchable and distributed through branded video search engines, portals, widgets and thumbnail feeds. Pixsy will power video search on both Veoh.com and VeohTV.

Mitgang comes to Veoh from Yahoo!, where he was Senior Vice President of the global team.
