Joost to Become White-Label Video Provider; CEO Volpi Out

New York - Joost, the video distribution firm launched by the creators of Kazaa and Skype, announced on Tuesday that it will cut staff and turn its focus from an entertainment portal to being a provider of white-label video services. Chief executive Mike Volpi is stepping down, but will remain chairman, and will be replaced by former Comcast executive Matt Zelesko.

YouTube Co-Founder Chen Takes Position at Google

San Bruno, Calif. - YouTube co-founder and chief technology officer Steve Chen has stepped down to take an unspecified position at parent company Google (NASD: GOOG), All Things D reported. "Steve shifted his focus to help with some Google engineering projects. He's still involved with YouTube and invested in its success," YouTube spokesman Ricard Reyes told The Times' Bits Blog. Chen's holdings in YouTube, which was acquired by Google for $1.65 billion, reportedly were worth more than $326 million in February 2007.

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Yahoo (NASD: YHOO) plans to shutter its Maven Networks online video distribution and ad platform, which it acquired for $160 million in January 2008, TechCrunch reported. "While video initiatives remain a priority for Yahoo, both for its consumer and advertising experiences, we are increasing investment in some areas while scaling back in others," the company told TechCrunch.

Supreme Court Declines Case; Cablevision DVR Remains Legal

Washington - The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal challenging the legality of Cablevision's (NYSE: CVC) network-based digital video recorder service, which the television networks and movie studios had charged amounted to copyright infringement. Unlike a TiVo, which stores recorded programs locally on a hard drive in the consumer's home, Cablevision's "remote storage" digital video recorder stores recorded programs on the company's own servers, and streams them on demand to customers.

YouTube Ups Video Upload Size Limit From 1GB to 2GB

San Bruno, Calif. - Google's (NASD: GOOG) YouTube has increased the maximum size of video file that may be uploaded from 1GB to 2GB, keeping the maximum length of videos at 10 minutes, Mashable reported. The move should make it easier for publishers of HD video to post their content to the site.

YouTube: Mobile Vids Up 400% a Day Since iPhone 3GS Debut

San Bruno, Calif. - Google's (NASD: GOOG) YouTube said on Thursday that mobile uploads to the site have jumped 1700% in the past six months, and have been rising 400% per day since Friday, when Apple's (NASD: AAPL) new video-capable iPhone 3GS went on sale. The company did not break down the numbers any further, to state how many mobile videos are uploaded daily, or by device, or what percentage they represent of the total videos uploaded to YouTube, NewTeeVee noted.

After installation, RealPlayer will identify video on sites like YouTube and CNN.com that users can port to Facebook, Twitter, or email. For portable device transfers, a selects the cell phone model or type of device -- including iPhone and iPod, BlackBerry, Android, Palm Pre, Zune, PSP, PlayStation 3, Xbox and Apple TV -- and RealPlayer SP then transcodes to the appropriate format.

NBC to Stream Wimbledon Finals Live Online

New York - NBC (NYSE: GE) Sports has announced plans to stream next month's men's and women's finals from the Wimbledon tennis tournament live on NBCSports.com, Mediapost reports. In fact, the network will stream all of its tournament coverage online, offering additional camera angle choices for Web viewers. The network streamed the U.S. Open golf finals live online on Monday.

Washington - JibJab, the California-based creator of political parity cartoon videos, on Saturday premiered its first satire of the Obama administration at the 65th Annual Radio and Television Correspondents Dinner, with the President, himself, in attendance. The 2-minute musical video, entitled "He's Barack Obama," portrays Obama as a super hero battling challenges such as the economy, foreign policy and pirates -- all to a heavy metal rendition of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." In a departure from its banjo-centric musicals of the Bush era, the company recruited musicians from bands such as the Foo Fighters and Jane's Addiction to take part in the project, which can be viewed at the link below.
