Bentonville, Ark. - Retail giant Walmart (NYSE: WMT) on Wednesday introduced the Walmart Smart Network, an in-store IPTV-based network that it hopes to expand to 27,000 screens in more than 2,700 stores by 2010. The company sunk $10 million into research and development for the network, which will allow advertisers to target by store, screen, day and time-of-day. Walmart is working with Studio2 for custom programming; Thomson's Premier Retail Networks for operations and ad sales; and DS-IQ for analytical insights for advertisers. Walmart previously operated a satellite-based in-store network in 3,000 stores.

JumpTV to Merge with IPTV Firm NeuLion in $40 Million Deal

USTelematics Adds Apple iTunes Support to In-Car System

Chicago - USTelematics (NASD: UTLM), a provider of Web-connected, in-car entertainment systems, said on Friday that it has added Apple iTunes (NASD: AAPL) functionality and services. USTelematics' Voyager product line offers live IPTV for passenger vehicles, connecting to the Internet over either 3G EVDO or WiMax networks. The product features a 40GB hard drive, delivers live streaming video, and can also play live and stored online games, from providers such as Disney Online and Xbox Live.

Microsoft Updates IPTV Software, Renames it "Mediaroom"

Chicago - Microsoft announced on Monday an update and name change for its Internet TV (IPTV) software, which will now be known as Mediaroom and include new features like in-home personal music and photo sharing, multiple picture-in-picture capabilities, support for digital terrestrial television, and new advanced applications tools for developers. So far, 18 IPTV providers worldwide have deployed Microsoft's IPTV software, including AT&T's U-verse service.
