AOL in Deal to Provide Video Content to Intel Viiv-based PCs

Dulles, Va. - AOL said on Monday that it partnered with chipmaker Intel to launch the AOL Video service for Intel Viiv-based PCs, allowing AOL's library of movies, TV shows, music videos and other content to stream from Viiv PCs to a television. PCs featuring Intel Viiv technology will also have access to AOL Radio, AOL Pictures and AOL Music Now. Separately, AOL announced the launch of a program that will provide outside developers and video content owners with open access to its video search engine. The move will allow developers to build video search-driven applications that access AOL's index of videos from across the web. Video content owners also will be able to submit feeds to AOL's index.

Yahoo, Intel Bring Online Fantasy Football Stats to Televisions

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Yahoo announced on Wednesday that it partnered with chipmaker Intel to launch Yahoo Sports for TV, a new service that links Yahoo's online fantasy football games to televisions connected to PCs using Intel's Viiv technology. The service will allow those of Yahoo's 6.7 million fantasy football players -- who also happen have a Viiv PC hooked up to their TV's -- to get real-time updates on their fantasy teams while simultaneously watching live games on TV.

In a moment that sent shockwaves through the personal technology industry, Sonos CEO John MacFarlane told the BBC on Tuesday [July 18, 2006] that he thinks the 'digital home' is still a decade away from becoming a reality. This pointed comment was picked up by hundreds of electronic and print publications... and not a day after I was speaking with a client on why the concept of the 'digital home' is wearing thin. I'm quite familiar with MacFarlane's message - it's one TDG has been sharing with its clients for several years.

Intel "Viiv" Technology to Facilitate Media Downloads to PCs, Portable Devices

Santa Clara, Calif. - Chipmaker Intel announced on Wednesday that it is working with over 40 content companies to provide support for its Viiv digital home technology, which it says will facilitate the download of music, movies, games and other content to Viiv-enabled PCs, portable devices and home media networks. The Intel Viiv technology, set for release in the first quarter of 2006, will be embedded in PCs, laptops, portable media players, digital TVs, DVD players and other devices. In the second half of 2006, Intel said that content providers including British Sky Broadcasting, Movielink, TiVo, Loudeye, Napster, VirginMega, Capcom, Square Enix and Ubisoft will begin utilizing Intel software that allows their content to be shared across home networks. Intel will provide engineering support, specifications and verification tools to content owners, content distributors, portals, software application developers and device vendors to help deliver Internet-based content services and software applications that are tested and verified to work with an Intel Viiv technology-based PC.
