Virgin Launches Mobile Limbo Auction for New Charity, Virgin Unite

Burlingame, Calif. - Richard Branson's Virgin Group has launched a text message-based game that will award prizes and donate all proceeds to Virgin Unite, the company's new global charitable arm. The game is a "Limbo Auction" from Burlingame, Calif.-based Limbo 41414, where players try to place the lowest unique bid, or the lowest amount that no other person has also placed as their bid. The first two bids are free and thereafter cost 99 cents; for each bid, players also receive points redeemable for prizes in Limbo's store. Auction items include a one-week trip for two at Branson's "private Caribbean paradise, Necker Island," and two Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Los Angeles - A pair of former Virgin Digital executives on Friday announced the launch of Wilshire Media Group, a company that will offer media firms consulting and software development services.

BT, Virgin Mobile to Launch Mobile TV, Radio Service in the U.K.

London - U.K. telecommunications firm BT Group announced that it has signed an agreement with Virgin Mobile to offer a digital TV and radio service to mobile phone users in the U.K. With the news, Virgin is set to become the first mobile operator in Europe to offer broadcast TV to mobile customers. Virgin Mobile subscribers will be able to view five digital TV channels and listen to more than 350 radio stations on a new handset, the Virgin Trilogy, which will run Microsoft's Windows Mobile software. The service will be launched sometime later this year.

Virgin Mobile USA Offers Exclusive Ringtones from Cash Money Records

Warren, N.J. - Virgin Mobile USA said on Thursday that it has partnered with Universal Music's Cash Money Records to offer exclusive ringtones from Cash Money artists. Through Virgin Mobile USA's "First Dibs" program, five ringtones from artists including Lil Wayne, Mannie Fresh and Hot Boyz will be available exclusively to its subscribers through February.

Motricity to Power Mobile Game Community for Virgin Mobile USA

Durham, N.C. - Motricity, a provider of online mobile gaming community development tools, announced on Wednesday that Virgin Mobile USA will use its services to create a mobile gaming community for its subscribers. North Carolina-based Motricity's service will provide player profile management, game ratings and reviews, leaderboards and buddy lists for the Virgin Mobile USA Players Club.

London -- The U.K.-based Virgin Group said on Wednesday that it plans to launch its digital music service, Virgin Digital UK, on Friday, offering a library of over one million tracks for 79p ($1.42) each. The service was developed in-house, and will feature tracks licensed through U.S.-based MusicNet. In addition to permanent downloads, Virgin Digital will offer a basic subscription for 9.99 pounds ($18) per month and a premium version for 14.99 pounds ($27) per month. Virgin Digital will be promoted within all Virgin Megastores, which will also sell MP3 hardware compatible with the service from Samsung, Sony, Creative and iRiver; the service will not support Apple's iPod. The company also partnered with U.K. broadband provider Blueyonder, to offer free downloads and trial subscriptions to Virgin Digital. "With a strong music heritage behind us, as a record label and a retailer, Virgin has a huge advantage, and platform to launch a digital service that will become the ultimate destination to buy, stream, burn and enjoy the best the music world has to offer," said Virgin Group founder Richard Branson.

Virgin Digital Acquires CD-to-MP3 Conversion Provider Shift Music

Los Angeles -- Virgin Digital, the digital entertainment unit of Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group, announced on Tuesday that it has acquired Los Angeles-based Shift Music, a digital music conversion, training and consulting company. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Shift Music founder Aaron Grosky will be named Virgin Digital's head of digital services and artist and label relations. Shift Music's CD-to-MP3 conversion services will be offered to customers of Virgin's online music service, which offers a library of over 1 million tracks and a subscription service for $7.99 per month.

Virgin Releases First 5GB Portable Digital Music Player

San Jose, Calif. -- Virgin Electronics, the new consumer electronics unit of Richard Branson's Virgin Group, on Tuesday introduced its Virgin Electronics Player, a 5GB portable digital music player. The $249 player weighs 3.1 ounces, offers dual headphone jacks and an FM tuner, and includes software that allows playlist creation directly on the device. The player also comes bundled with Virgin Digital, the company's digital music software and service, which offers individual tracks for $0.99 as well as a $7.99 per month subscription service.

French Virgin Unit Files Complaint Against Apple Over iPod Compatibility

San Francisco -- The French online music unit of Virgin has filed a complaint against Apple Computer, alleging unfair competition over Apple's refusal to license the FairPlay security technology necessary to make songs purchased from Virgin Mega and other retailers play on Apple's popular iPod player, CNET News.com reported. Apple revealed the complaint, which was filed with the French Competition Council in June, in its quarterly report released on Thursday. A hearing on Virgin Mega's complaint will be held in October or November. Apple has thus far ignored all requests to license FairPlay, and threatened legal action against rival RealNetworks, which on its own last week released software called Harmony that works around FairPlay and allows songs purchased from Real to play on the iPod.

Virgin Launches Consumer Electronics Unit, Releases MP3 Player

San Jose, Calif. -- Virgin Electronics, a new consumer electronics development unit of the company funded by Richard Branson's Virgin Group, announced on Monday the opening of its new offices in Silicon Valley, and the launch of its first product, the silver-dollar sized Virgin Electronics Wearable 128MB MP3 Player. The company, which relocated from New York to attract Silicon Valley talent, named former Handspring and Creative Labs executive Greg Woock as CEO, and former Palm and Handspring executive Joe Sipher as senior vice president of marketing. Virgin Electronics' new $99 MP3 player, which will be sold at retail chain Target, weighs just half an ounce and was designed to be worn around the neck or arm.

Virgin, MusicNet Partner on Digital Music Services

London -- Virgin Group announced on Monday that in August it will launch a digital music service in conjunction with MusicNet that will incorporate the company's Virgin Megastores, the Internet, mobile phones and portable devices. MusicNet, a joint venture between Time Warner, RealNetworks and labels Bertelsmann, EMI and Sony, has been offering an online music subscription service since 2001. The new Virgin Digital service will feature a download store and subscription service offering over 700,000 tracks. Virgin said that Zack Zalon, former general manager of the company's Radio Free Virgin online radio service, has been named president of Virgin Digital.

Virgin to Launch Music Download Store Early Next Year

San Francisco -- Virgin Entertainment Group, operator of the Virgin Megastores retail music chain and part of the company that also owns the mobile phone carrier and airline, has announced plans to launch its own music download store early next year, Reuters reported. Although details were scant, a company executive told reporters that the service's pricing would compete with Apple's iTunes Music Store and Roxio's Napster, which both charge $0.99 per song download.
