Richmond, Va. - In a win for Verizon, the Virginia House of Delegates on Monday passed compromise legislation designed to hasten competition for cable television services in the state. The bill, already passed by the Senate, would help Verizon more rapidly launch its FiOS TV service in the state, while at the same time give local governments the authority to ensure that the company doesn't solely target wealthy neighborhoods. Verizon already offers its Internet-based FiOS TV service in parts of Northern Virginia.

AOL Cuts 750 Employees, Mostly in Virginia

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on December 8, 2004 - 4:11am.
Dulles, Va. -- Continuing to feel the pinch from mounting subscriber losses, America Online has cut 750 employees, mostly from its Virginia headquarters. The cuts, including several at the executive level, account for approximately 4% of the company's overall workforce, and are expected to save AOL about $75 million next year. The move also affected employees in California, Ohio and New York. AOL has lost subscribers in each of the past seven quarters, with dial-up customers either switching to lower-cost alternatives or opting for broadband connections offered by either cable operators or telephone companies. The company, which also cut about 450 employees a year ago, reportedly is under pressure from parent Time Warner to produce about $1 billion in revenue annually.

Dulles, Va. -- Needing to trim expenses in response to mounting subscriber losses, America Online may be on the verge of cutting more than 700 of the roughly 5,000 jobs at its Dulles, Virginia headquarters, The Washington Post reported on Tuesday. The cuts will likely take place in December, according to the article. AOL is searching for a way to turn around its financial fortunes after losing about 3.3 million U.S. subscribers since 2002. In the past two years, many subscribers have fled AOL in search of either faster broadband connections or cheaper dial-up prices. The Post said that AOL is attempting to meet its internal goal of producing about $1 billion in cash annually for parent company Time Warner. AOL, which claims a total of 23.4 million subscribers, employs a total of around 20,000 people, of which 13,000 are based in the U.S.
