"Call of Duty" Generates Record $550 Million in First 5 Days

Santa Monica, Calif. - Video game publisher Activision Blizzard (NASD: ATVI), a unit of Vivendi, announced on Wednesday that its "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" has become "the biggest entertainment launch in history," racking up $550 million during its first five days on sale. The previous five-day sales record for a video game was set last summer by "Grand Theft Auto IV," which sold 6 million units and made $500 million; the largest five-day opening worldwide box office gross is held by "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" ($394 million).

Santa Monica, Calif. - Video game publisher Activision (NASD: ATVI), a unit of Vivendi, announced on Thursday that its anticipated "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" game racked up an estimated $310 million in first-day sales across North America and the U.K. Activision said the game received a record number of pre-orders before its official release on Tuesday, when over 10,000 U.S. retail outlets stayed open until midnight to sell the title.

New York - Comcast (NASD: CMCSA), the nation's largest cable TV provider, has agreed with General Electric (NYSE: GE) on a valuation of $30 billion for NBC Universal, the film and television company it is seeking to acquire, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The sources told The Journal that the two companies "are now ironing out the final details of an agreement...which could come as early as the end of this week."

New York - Comcast (NASD: CMCSA) is closer to a deal with General Electric (NYSE: GE) to take over control of its NBC Universal unit, after meetings last week concluded with a tentative agreement on the main points, The New York Times reported, citing people briefed on the talks. Under the proposed deal, Comcast would contribute "several billions of dollars in cash and its own stable of cable networks," and receive a 51% stake of NBC Universal.

U.K. Parliament to Consider "Three-Strikes" P2P Bill

London - The U.K. government plans to introduce a bill mimicking France's recently enacted "three-strikes" legislation on file-sharing, which authorizes the suspension of the Internet accounts of those warned repeatedly they are violating copyrights, according to published reports. The bill will "make technical measures available, including account suspension," U.K. business, innovation and skills minister Peter Mandelson said at a meeting of government and entertainment industry heads, according to PaidContent's coverage.

Activision to Extend "Guitar Hero" to Other Instruments

New York - Video game publisher Activision (NASD: ATVI) has affirmed plans to extend its wildly popular "Guitar Hero" franchise beyond the guitar and bass to other instruments, a la rival music-based game "Rock Band," Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said in an interview with Portfolio.com. "We'll include a lot of other instruments [and] vocals," said Kotick, while refraining from giving any clues as to when these new elements might appear in the game franchise.

Los Angeles - Vivendi's Sierra Entertainment said on Thursday that rapper 50 Cent will reprise his starring role in a video game sequel, "50 Cent: Blood on the Sand," set for release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the fall. The console version of the follow-up to the multi-million unit-selling "50 Cent: Bulletproof" is being developed by Swordfish Studios. Vivendi Games Mobile will also release a mobile version.

Vivendi Debuts Unlimited Mobile Content Service Zaoza

Paris - Vivendi has launched a subscription-based mobile content service, Zaoza, that charges users about $4.42 per month for unlimited downloads of music, ringtones, games and videos, MocoNews reported. Content partners at launch include Sony BMG, THQ and Eidos. The site already claims 100,000 beta users in France. Vivendi hopes to grow this number to 500,000 by year's end, spurred by launches in Germany and the U.K. planned for later this year.

There was no shortage of news for the week of Jan. 21-25. The biggest story: The Federal Reserve lowered the benchmark federal funds rate by three-quarters of a percentage point to 3.5%, its lowest level since September 2005, but the Fed’s actions couldn’t stop an already shaky stock market from continuing its downward spiral. After a sharp mid-week increase on news of the rate cut, the DMW100 ended slightly lower on the week.

Blizzard's "World of Warcraft" Tops 10 Million Subscribers

Irvine, Calif. - Vivendi's Blizzard Entertainment game publisher unit announced on Tuesday that its "World of Warcraft" massively multiplayer online roleplaying game now counts more than 10 million subscribers. The game launched in November 2004, and now counts 2 million subscribers in Europe, 2.5 million in North America and 5.5 million in Asia.
