U.K.'s O2 to Allow iPhone Unlocking After Contract Expires

London - U.K. wireless carrier O2 plans to allow customers to unlock their Apple (NASD: AAPL) iPhones for use on competing networks, according to an interview with CEO Matthew Key published by the Times Online. "Once the iPhone becomes available on other UK networks, we will allow O2 customers to unlock their iPhones, although of course they will still need to honor any outstanding contract period they have. At the end of their contract period, they are entirely free to move to another operator," Key told the Times. O2 competitors Orange and Vodafone are expected to offer the iPhone in the U.K.

Vodafone to Sell iPhone in U.K. Next Year

London - Wireless network operator Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) has reached a deal to begin selling Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone in the U.K. in early 2010. Fellow U.K. operator Orange announced its own deal to sell the iPhone in the U.K. last week. The deals mean initial U.K. iPhone carrier partner O2's two-year exclusive has concluded.

Vodafone Mobile Music Store Goes DRM-Free; 3 Majors on Board

London - International mobile carrier Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) announced that it plans to begin selling mobile song downloads free of digital rights management (DRM) restrictions, and has licensed tracks from Universal Music, Sony (NYSE: SNE) Music and EMI so far for the offering. The Vodafone Music Store will initially offer over 1 million DRM-free tracks, which will be downloadable to a PC or mobile phone, and also transferrable to portable devices like iPods -- "provided they belong to the customer." Reuters reported that Vodafone is also in talks with Warner Music (NYSE: WMG) to join the DRM-free offering.

Los Angeles - Wireless carrier Vodafone's Australian unit on Monday announced the launch of its MusicStation unlimited mobile music service, the first such offering to be made available in the country. The service offers unlimited access to a catalog of over one million tracks from all the major labels and a range of independents for a flat fee of $2.75 per week. Vodafone has also launched Omnifone's MusicStation service in the U.K., South Africa and New Zealand.

Vodafone Enables Text, Picture Messaging via Facebook

London - Vodafone has launched a new U.K. service that lets its subscribers who are also Facebook users send text messages directly from their Facebook pages for ten pence per message, The Register reports. Users will also be able to send picture messages to mobile phones via Facebook for 30 pence each.

London - Mobile network operator Vodafone UK (NYSE: VOD) has announced the launch of a new mobile music store, Vodafone Music, which allows users to download songs a la carte over-the-air to their phones. The service lets users add songs from the Vodafone live! Music Shop, which is powered by RealNetworks. Vodafone also still operates MusicStation, a subscription service powered by Omnifone that it is pre-loading on its customers' phones.

Omnifone: MusicStation Now Top U.K. Unlimited Download Service

London - Omnifone announced on Friday that its MusicStation unlimited mobile music download service on Vodafone's (NYSE: VOD) network is now the largest digital music subscription service in the U.K., overtaking even PC-centric services in terms of subscriber numbers. The company did not break out subscriber tallies for the service, which allows subscribers to download an unlimited number of tracks to their mobile phones for about $3.92 per week.

Los Angeles - Apple (NASD: AAPL) has signed deals with international wireless carrier Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) to distribute its iPhone in 10 countries, and with Telecom Italia to distribute the device in Italy. Vodafone will offer the iPhone in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey. Apple recently partnered with Rogers Communications to distribute the iPhone in Canada, and is already offering the device in the U.K., France, Germany and Spain.

Beginning on April 21, one of seven tracks from the album will be released each day, and remain available for download for 24 hours before being replaced by the next track. Vodafone subscribers in Spain, Portugal, Germany and Belgium additionally get exclusive mobile access to the new single "4 Minutes" immediately.
