Menlo Park, Calif. - Promptu, a developer of voice-powered search and navigation services for mobile phones, announced on Thursday that it has raised $11.6 million in a new round of venture capital financing.

Paris - French Internet service provider Club Internet, a unit of Deutsche Telekom, announced on Friday that it will launch a triple-play service offering that will be based on Microsoft's TV software platform.

AOL to Add Free Phone Service to Instant Messenger

Dulles, Va. - Hoping to build on the popularity of its instant messaging service, AOL is planning to add a bold new feature later this month that will allow its 41 million IM users to receive free incoming calls through their computers, The New York Times reported on Friday. Under the plan, users of the company's AIM instant messenger will be able to sign up for a free phone number to receive calls through a new service known as AIM Phoneline. AOL also reportedly will offer an upgraded service allowing them to make calls to anyone in the U.S. or 30 other countries for $14.90 a month. Both services are expected to be launched on May 16. Separately, The Times said that AOL also is planning to introduce AIM Pages, its answer to social networking phenomenon MySpace.

Yahoo Launches New Internet Voice Services with AT&T

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Further expanding their relationship, Yahoo and telecommunications giant AT&T on Wednesday launched new Internet-based voice communications services, including a co-branded version of Yahoo's instant messenger with voice. The services offer consumers enhanced PC-based calling capabilities for both making phone calls, depending on the combination of services purchased. The two companies already team to offer high-speed Internet services.

Eidos Signs U.K. Actress Keeley Hawes to Voice Next Lara Croft Game

London - U.K. video game publisher Eidos said this week that it has signed British actress Keeley Hawes to provide voice talent in the role of Lara Croft for its upcoming "Tomb Raider Legend" title for PlayStation 2, PSP, Xbox, Xbox 360 and the PC. Hawes is mainly known for her U.K. TV roles, in series such as the BBC's "Spooks". The new Tomb Raider title is slated for release in April.

San Francisco - CNET News.com on Monday reported on the development of advanced voice-recognition software, which will soon be available in the car to help navigate satellite radio stations, or choose from songs to play from an iPod using speech commands. Bellevue, Wash.-based VoiceBox has partnered with both XM Satellite Radio and Johnson Controls, an auto technology supplier, to enable voice search on XM and from iPods.

AgileTV Raises $22 Million for Cable TV Voice Navigation

Menlo Park, Calif. -- AgileTV, a developer of voice navigation technology for the cable TV industry, announced on Tuesday that it has raised $22 million in a recent round of venture capital financing. Valence Capital led the investment round; Insight Communications and Lauder Partners also participated. Menlo Park, Calif.-based AgileTV's Promptu system utilizes voice recognition technology to enable cable TV viewers to search for programs by genre or find a specific show -- including on-demand or those stored on a digital video recorder -- simply by saying the program name, network name, favorite actor or sports team. A database of more than 100,000 phrases and delivers higher than 90% accuracy, according to AgileTV. The Promptu system is currently in market trials with several top cable operators. The company will use the new funds for further product development.
