Starz Shutters Vongo Service, Shifts to White-Label Offerings

Los Angeles - Vongo, the Web video-on-demand service launched by Liberty Media's (NASD: LINTA) Starz unit back in 2006, is being shut down at the end of next month, according to a note on the website.

Englewood, Colo. - Starz Entertainment, the pay-TV movie network and unit of Liberty Media, said on Monday that it has acquired multi-year distribution rights to more than 100 films from Screen Media Ventures, for release on its Vongo online movie download service. The deal includes films such as "Piranha," "Mojave Moon," "Men Seeking Women" and "Johnny Skidmarks." Vongo charges $9.99 per month for access to more than 3,500 movie and video selections, as well as a live, streaming Starz TV channel.

Englewood, Colo. - Liberty Media's Starz Media on Tuesday announced a multi-year licensing agreement with Vongo, Starz Entertainment's broadband video download service. The deal will provide Vongo with more than 250 new movies and other video titles for on-demand rental, or purchase and download through its service. Vongo offers unlimited streaming access to 1,000 movies and 2,500 videos, as well as a streaming Starz TV channel, for $9.99 per month.

Starz Launches Vongo Web-Based Portable Video-on-Demand Service

Englewood, Colo. - Starz Entertainment Group, a cable TV network unit of Liberty Media, on Tuesday announced the launch of a new Internet-based video-on-demand service, Vongo, that lets users download movies for playback on their TVs, computers or portable media devices. For $9.99 per month, subscribers will have access to unlimited downloads of more than 1,000 movies and video selections -- including recent titles from Universal Pictures and New Line Cinema, and library selections from other studios -- in addition to a live stream of the Starz TV channel. Pay-per-view titles will also be offered for $3.99 per movie. Starz partnered with Sony's Connect Video download service, and Vongo will be a featured content provider when that service launches later this year. Starz also teamed with Microsoft, whose Windows Media technology will be used to allow transfer of content to Windows-based PCs and Windows Mobile-based portable media players. "Vongo will provide the key content application that will drive a new era in portable video delivered over the Internet," said Starz president and CEO Robert B. Clasen.
