San Diego - Sony (NYSE: SNE) on Thursday introduced three new Walkman digital music and video players (series S, E and B). The Walkman S-series ($150 4GB, $180 8GB) supports Windows video files with DRM, and features in-flight noise-cancelling headphones and SensMe Channels -- automatically created to align with a user's preferences. The E-series ($100 4GB, $140 8GB) also supports video but offers fewer features, while the B-series ($45 1GB, $60 2GB) line is meant as an entry-level music player, and drops video support entirely. Tokyo - In a bid to level the field with rival Apple's Video iPod, Sony announced on Thursday that it is developing a version of its Walkman portable audio player that also plays video, Reuters reported. Sony senior vice president Hiroshi Yoshioka confirmed the plan for reporters at a news conference, but declined to provide any further details. Yoshioka added that Sony's goal is to double the Walkman's current 10% share of the digital music player market. Apple's iPod with video playback capabilities has now been on the market a year.

London - Cell phone maker Sony Ericsson on Thursday introduced two new Walkman-branded music phones, the W850 and W710. The Sony Ericsson W850, a "slider" model available in black or white, has a feature that lights up the control keys in rhythm with the up to 4GB of music that can be stored on the device. It also features Walkman player 2.0 software, which includes Gracenote Mobile MusicID technology that lets users record a few seconds of a song either via mic or FM radio, and receive artist and song title information back from Gracenote. The W710 Walkman phone, a flip model available in graphite and violet, features a motion sensor and fitness applications that can measure running speed, distance and time, as well as how many steps one walks each day. The W710 can hold up to 1GB of music, and comes with an armband clip for exercise. While the W850 ($385) will only be offered in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the W710 ($260-$385) will also ship in the Americas; both models will become available in the third quarter of 2006.

San Francisco - In response to Apple's dominance of the digital music market, Sony this week made its own data compression technology that shrinks music and video files compatible with Apple's AAC format, CNET News.com reported. The change will enable the exchange of songs between iPod and Sony Walkman players via a PC, but will still not allow songs purchased from Apple's iTunes Store to play on Sony devices. Sony also included support for AAC in a software update for the Japanese version of its PSP handheld game device.

Tokyo - Sony has announced plans to release the first portable DVD player under its Walkman brand, a device about the size of a DVD movie case with a 7-inch screen and stereo speaker cradle that will sell for about $300. The D-VE7000S will play all CD and DVD discs, including new dual-layer DVD formats. The DVD Walkman will run for three hours on a full charge, or up to seven hours with the screen's backlight in the off position. The device is slated to go on sale in North America in May, and in Japan in early June.

About the size of a pack of chewing gum, the E Series players will be available in six colors (pink, blue, silver, violet, black, and lime green) and in 512MB, 1GB and 2GB capacities. They will also feature a "quick-charge" functionality that Sony says provides three hours of battery life in just three minutes. Sony did not provide pricing details for the players, which will go on sale in Europe at the end of April.

London - Sony has acknowledged that the music software that comes with its new Walkman digital music players can result in some performance issues, and recommends that users download an older application while it fixes the Connect Player 1.0 software, The Register reported. Some users have reported that the bundled Connect Player, which integrates the Walkman players tightly with Sony's Connect online music store, can crash when transferring songs to a Walkman, or else run very slowly. Sony has apologized and said it is now investigating the issues.

New York - The New York Times recently reported on Andreas Pavel, a Brazilian who has finally won his claim to be the inventor of the Walkman. Pavel patented his idea for a portable tape player with headphones in several countries during the late 70's, and shopped his idea to electronics firms including Grundig, Philips and Yamaha, before Sony came out with its Walkman in 1979. Pavel eventually sued Sony, but lawsuits and negotiations dragged out for 25 years before he reached a reported eight-figure settlement with the company, which now also pays Pavel royalties on several Walkman models.

Amsterdam -- Japanese consumer electronics firm Sony on Tuesday introduced its first Walkman portable music player to feature a hard drive and support for the ubiquitous MP3 format. The 20GB player will go on sale in the U.K. and Japan next month for $462, nearly $40 more than Apple's comparable 20GB model iPod. The device, which comes in five colors, will be released in the rest of Europe early next year. The Walkman will not play songs purchased from Apple's iTunes Store; likewise, the iPod cannot play songs purchased from Sony's Connect online music store. Sony contends that the Walkman can hold up to twice as many songs as an iPod, though, if songs are formatted using its proprietary ATRAC3plus compression.
