Rupert Murdoch must be very pleased today as MySpace for the first time surpassed Yahoo! Mail as the most visited domain on the Internet in the US. According to new figures from the Research Company Hitwise, MySpace had a market share figure of 4.5% of all US Internet visits for the week ending July 8, an increase in visits of over 4300% over two years and 132% over last year. Note that the flat green line on the graph is Google visits in comparison (!). As of July 11, MySpace reports having over 92 million users.

Marina del Rey, Calif. - CinemaNow, an Internet video-on-demand service majority owned by Lions Gate Entertainment, announced on Tuesday that it has signed a licensing agreement with Fox Entertainment Group for the rights to offer select movies and TV shows on a download-to-own basis. The deal includes movies from Twentieth Century Fox like "The Ringer" and "Cheaper By The Dozen 2." Also covered are TV programs like "24," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" -- from the company's TV library and current selections airing on its FX, Fuel TV and Speed networks. Permanent film downloads will sell on CinemaNow for between $9.95 and $19.95, while TV shows will cost $1.99 per episode. Marina del Rey, Calif.-based CinemaNow has recently signed similar download-to-own licensing deals with Disney's Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Lionsgate.

Palo Alto, Calif. - Lala.com, a site that facilitates CD trading between members through the mail, on Thursday announced the official launch of its service. The site claims a catalog of 1.8 million album titles available from its members, who pay Lala.com $1.49 for each CD they receive from another member. Palo Alto, Calif.-based Lala.com said it has established a charitable foundation for musicians -- the Z Foundation -- to which it will voluntarily contribute 20% of its CD trading revenue to compensate artists. The company estimates monthly contributions of between $10,000 and $50,000 to the foundation, which will focus on providing health and dental care to working musicians. To qualify, a musician is defined as any individual who has performed live or on a recorded release in the last year, and whose music-related income accounts for more than half of total income. Lala.com founder Bill Nguyen told Reuters that record labels have had mixed reactions to the service. "One label thought it would help them to know their customers for the first time," Nguyen told Reuters. "But others' view of us is as the devil, more like peer-to-peer services."

New York - The New York Public Library has added the ability for its cardholders to download free movies through its eCollection online service, which is powered by technology from OverDrive and also offers music, audiobooks and e-books. The movies may be downloaded to a PC or laptop, and also transferred to certain portable devices. The online video library includes foreign films like "The Bicycle Thief" and Fellini's "8 1/2", documentaries, children's titles, IMAX films and various live performances of stage productions. Cleveland-based OverDrive said in March it is in negotiations with providers such as A&E Home Video to add content to its library movie download service, which is also available from the website of the Denver Public Library.

London - U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 announced that it has signed a deal with Disney/ABC's Buena Vista International Television that will bring episodes of "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" to both its website and video-on-demand system. Channel 4 will offer two seasons of "Lost" in HD and the second season of "Desperate Housewives" on video-on-demand services from cable TV firm ntl/Telewest. The "Lost" episodes will also be available for 24-hour download via Windows Media Player from Channel 4's website. All episodes will cost 99 pence (about $1.25) each.

San Francisco - CNET News.com on Friday reported on YouTube, the video-sharing site that has seen the number of video streams it serves jump from 3 million a day to 30 million since launching in December 2005. The site, which claimed 4.2 million visitors in February, according to ComScore Networks, features no ads and does not charge users to upload the blend of amateur and semi-professional clips found on the site. YouTube has removed several "Saturday Night Live" clips at NBC's request, and warns users not to post videos for which they don't own the rights. "We've been meeting with almost every TV network, record label and movie studio to talk about ways to partner and help them reach a broader demographic," YouTube spokeswoman Juile Supan told News.com. "Eventually, we're going to introduce extremely relevant ads that will benefit users and won't disrupt the service."

Hong Kong - Hong Kong Broadband Network Limited (HKBN), a provider of broadband Internet access in Hong Kong, announced on Tuesday the launch of a free, legal movie promotional download site for all Hong Kong residents. The site is offering five Chinese films -- "Cocktail," "My Wife is 18," "Heat Team," "Tiramisu" and "Shiver" -- with a catch: there is an 18-minute download limit. HKBN said subscribers to its 100 Mbps service will be able to download a 4GB movie in under 7 minutes, while for subscribers to competing, slower services it will likely take over an hour.

"Tower Records stores have always carried a selection of relevant book titles. Our online store features a selection rivaling other large online booksellers," said Tower senior marketing officer Russ Eisenman. "This is a very exciting launch for us and another positive step for Tower as we strive to deliver the best shopping experience for our valued customers." The company added that, since declaring bankruptcy in February 2004, it opened two new stores in 2005 and plans refurbishments for all of its stores in 2006. It also recently worked with Outhink Media to establish the TowerPod podcasting network.

"Our online testing process allows our many viewers the opportunity to take the test from their very own computer, at home, at the office -- virtually anywhere," Jeopardy executive producer Harry Friedman told THR. About 400 of the 25,000 hopefuls who go through the Jeopardy's screening process appear on the game show each year.

London - The U.K. government's Gambling Commission has issued a draft Code of Practice that would for the first time bring online gambling under the Commission's jurisdiction. The draft Conditions and Codes of Practice, which if approved would go into effect in 2007 as part of a larger U.K. Gambling Act, would compel online gambling sites to constantly inform users of how much time and money they've spent online, as well as keep track of and provide help and information to problem gamblers -- including the ability for them to prohibit themselves from such sites. Gambling sites would also have to apply for licenses from the Commission, carry out random checks to ensure bettors are over 21, and provide filtering technology to parents. "We will monitor all British gambling operators to make sure they comply with our rules," said Gambling Commission chairman Peter Dean. "We have the power to fine or revoke the licenses of those who fail to do so, and to prosecute illegal gambling. We won't hesitate to use these powers if need be."

New York - In a bid to challenge new offerings from Apple's iTunes Store, Yahoo and Google Video, America Online plans to begin selling TV programs and other video content through its website later this year, Reuters reported on Monday. "We've been in discussion for months with every major cable and broadcast network," Kevin Conroy, executive vice president of AOL Media Networks, told Reuters. The service is expected to include both free and pay-per-download programming, as well as a subscription component, and will utilize Microsoft delivery and security technology that enables downloads to portable media players. Before the new service launches, AOL plans later this month to offer nearly 5000 vintage TV shows for free, on a service called In2TV.
