EU Names Winners of Information Society Technology Prizes

Brussels - The EU has presented this year's European Information Society Technology (IST) Grand Prizes to a trio of companies hailing from France, Denmark and the Netherlands. The companies were given $240,000 apiece for developing a digital content fingerprinting system to deter multimedia pirates (France-based AdvestiSEARCH); computer memory that can survive radiation and temperatures of as high as 200°C (Netherlands-based Nanomech); and a security system that recognizes your face (Denmark-based Guardia Control System). Twenty IST awards were awarded in total; France, Germany, Spain and the U.K. accounted for most of this year's winners, with each country producing three prize-winning companies.

CNET Names "Best of CES" Technology Awards Winners

Las Vegas - Technology news and information publisher CNET this weekend named its picks for the best new technologies showcased at last week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Creative's $330 Zen Vision:M portable MP3 and video player, dubbed an "iPod killer," was named overall "Best in Show." The "People's Voice" winner was the Pioneer Inno, a handheld XM Satellite Radio receiver that allows recording of and storage of up to 50 hours of XM content in addition to MP3 files. Other Best in Show winners included the Pioneer BDP-HD1 Blu-ray DVD player, in the home video category; the Samsung ZX20 cell phone; and in the gaming category, Nvidia's GeForce Quad SLI graphics processor.

Winners Named for 2005 Digital Entertainment & Media Excellence Awards

Los Angeles - Winners of the 2005 Digital Entertainment & Media Excellence (DEMX) Awards, an event produced by Billboard parent company VNU and sponsored by Digital Media Wire, were announced last night in Los Angeles. The awards were held in conjunction with DEMXPO, a two-day conference covering issues in digital music, mobile, digital video, gaming and advertising. AOL chairman and CEO Jon Miller was named "Visionary of the Year," while Microsoft was recognized as "Innovator of the Year" for its Xbox Live Arcade. Other winners included Bungie Studios' "Halo 2," for best console game; Jamdat Mobile's "DOOM RPG" (best mobile game); the U.S. Army's "America's Army" (best advergame); GoldPocket Interactive (best television technology); Motorola iRadio (best radio service); and National Geographic's "Inside 9/11" DVD Set (best use of technology for educational programming).

Visa Online Game Contest Sends Winners to 2006 Winter Olympics

San Francisco - Credit card firm Visa on Tuesday launched an online game competition that will award winners from 23 countries with trips to the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Italy. The Visa Championships-Torino 2006 promotion will feature the online games "Bobsleigh," "Giant Slalom" and "Snowboard Cross."

Los Angeles -- Billboard Magazine, along with co-producer Digital Media Wire, hosted their first annual Digital Entertainment Awards on Friday night, recognizing contributions in digital entertainment over the past year from individuals and companies in the music, video games, film, television and video industries. Following appearances by digital entertainment industry players including HDNet founder Mark Cuban and musician Todd Rundgren, Best of Show awards were presented to Apple CEO Steve Jobs for "Visionary of the Year" and to Apple for "Brand of the Year," while XM Satellite Radio CEO Hugh Panero was named "Innovator of the Year." Other awards went to Prince, whose online NPG Music Club was recognized as the "Best Use of Technology by an Artist;" and to Burger King and ad agency Crispin, Porter & Bogusky's "Subservient Chicken," named "Advergame of the Year."
