Oslo, Norway -- The Mobile Media Company, a publisher of wireless entertainment content, announced on Wednesday that it has raised $9 million, in the form of a long-term convertible bond purchased by the Investment Fund. Founded in 1993, Norway-based Mobile Media Company develops wireless games, entertainment services and mobile marketing applications. Already profitable in Europe, the company will use the funds to increase operations in the North American and Asia Pacific markets.

Wireless Entertainment Start-Up ThumbPlay Raises Venture Capital Funds

New York -- ThumbPlay, a New York-based start-up developing wireless entertainment services, announced that it has raised an undisclosed amount of venture capital financing from i-Hatch Ventures and Redwood Partners. The company also announced a partnership with hip-hop artist Jay-Z, through which it will offer concertgoers attending shows on the rapper's current tour to send $0.99 text messages that are then displayed on large video screens installed at concert venues. In addition to the "Holla at Ya Boyz" text message application, ThumbPlay offers delivery technology for ringtones, games and other wireless content, including streaming multimedia on 2.5G and 3G networks.

Wireless Entertainment Publisher Dwango Raises $3 Million

Seattle -- Dwango North America, a developer and publisher of wireless entertainment content, announced on Tuesday that it has raised $3 million in new funding from Weiss, Peck & Greer Investments. The investment follows an earlier aggregate funding of $5 million from Alexandria Investment Management. Seattle-based Dwango, the U.S. arm of Japanese firm Dwango Co. Ltd., has delivered games and ringtones to partners including Rolling Stone and ESPN. "This most recent investment will drive continued product development, brand acquisitions and international expansion to meet increasing global demand for our mobile entertainment content," said Dwango CEO Rick Hennessey.

Wireless Entertainment Publisher Jamdat Mobile Raises $11 Million

Los Angeles -- Jamdat Mobile, a developer and publisher of wireless entertainment content, announced on Wednesday that it has raised $11 million in its fourth round of venture capital financing from Benchmark Capital. Los Angeles-based Jamdat said it achieved profitability earlier this year, but will use the additional capital to enhance its content portfolio and expand its worldwide distribution. The company, which provides its wireless games and other content to wireless network operators, opened a European office earlier this year and also acquired Montreal-based Hexacto Games. Other investors in the company have included Apax Partners, Qualcomm, Intel and Sun Microsystems.

Wireless Entertainment Publisher PlayPhone Announces Launch

San Jose, Calif. -- PlayPhone, a publisher of wireless entertainment content, on Tuesday announced its launch. The company announced strategic alliances with Japanese game manufacturer Sammy and Latin American wireless entertainment distributor Atrativa, and said its ringtones are already available in pre-paid packs at 4,000 retail locations including Rite Aid and Fred Meyers. San Jose, Calif.-based PlayPhone expects to have at least fifteen branded packs in more than 10,000 stores by the end of the third quarter of 2003, with retail packs featuring mobile Java games launching in the second quarter of this year. The packs are universally accessible and will work with most phones from all of the major North American carriers.
