Indaba Contest Offers Web Musical Collaborations With Yo-Yo Ma

New York - Indaba Music, the provider of an online music collaboration Web application, on Wednesday announced a contest that challenges musicians to collaborate with famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma. To promote his forthcoming album "Songs of Joy and Peace," Yo-Yo Ma posted a recording of himself performing the melody to one of the album's tracks, and asked musicians to add their own counter-melody or record an entirely new set of variations. The winner, as selected by Ma, will get the chance to record a new piece of music with him.

Yo-Yo Ma Album Sells More Digital Copies Than CDs in First Week

New York - Classical music label Sony BMG Masterworks announced on Thursday that recording artist Yo-Yo Ma has become the first in the label's history to sell more digital than physical copies of an album in its first week on sale. Released on Jan. 9, "Appassionato" hit #1 on Billboard's Top Classical chart, #79 on the Billboard Top 200, and was #4 on iTunes for the week, with 57.1% of all sales made being digital.

Instant Live to Sell Post-Concert CDs from Yo-Yo Ma Tour

Los Angeles - Instant Live, a unit of concert promoter Live Nation, said on Friday that it will distribute live concert recordings for several dates on The Silk Road Project featuring Yo-Yo Ma Your. The company partnered with Sony Classical on the endeavor, which will offer concertgoers CDs of the performance for sale at the venue immediately after the show. Los Angeles-based Instant Live has also distributed live recordings from the Pixies, Bauhaus and the Black Crowes.
