Mark Cuban: Talking Youtube Live

Authored by Mark Cuban on November 24, 2008 - 8:35pm.

This past Nov 22nd Youtube had its first major live event. A concert featuring HDNet fave Joe Satriani , Katy Perry Will.I.Am and others.   Of course everyone involved in the space is chattering about whether or not the show was a success. According to Mogulus, the live internet broadcast peaked at about 700k simultaneous users. That’s huge for an internet audience.   I think by any traditional Youtube measure , you have to call it a success, with some major gotchas.

Youtube’s (NASD: GOOG) first live streaming video event, YouTube Live, took place on Saturday night and featured some 50 YouTube and real world personalities (including Bo Burnham in the video above – remember where you first read about him?). So how did it go? Well, the show had about 700,000 simultaneous viewers at the peak of the event, according to NewTeeVee, and clips from YouTube Live have been viewed an additional 2,5 million times in the immediate 24 hours afterwards (compared to, for example, the 2008 edition of Live Earth which saw simultaneous online views peak at about 287,000, according to Cynopsis Digital). Those are not the kind of numbers that would make for a successful show on network television, but that is not the point.

YouTube (NASD: GOOG) is going back to the future with creating appointment TV on the Internet. In the Mahalo Daily video above, YouTube’s Head of Marketing, Chris Di Cesare, talks about how they were urged by the community to do streaming live events. In response, they’ll do doing the first one on November 22nd with three streams from different angles. So what is the event going to be about? YouTube puts it this way: “Part concert, part variety show and part party, YouTube Live will bring together some of the amazing videos and unforgettable individuals that have contributed towards making the site what it is today.”
