Analysis: The User-Generated Content Myth

Authored by Scott Karp on October 26, 2007 - 10:01am.

A whole mythology is emerging around the idea of “users” — consumers, fans, regular average folk — creating content that media companies and brands can leverage. It’s a compelling idea — but it’s a myth. The reality is that “average people” don’t create a lot of content — at least not the commercially viable kind. Most people are too busy. Those that do “create content” — and who do it well — are those who are predisposed to being content creators. The have some relevant skills, training, raw talent, motivation, something.

The Great LonelyGirl15 Heist Rolls On

Authored by Scott Goldberg on May 2, 2007 - 9:27am.
LonelyGirl15 Who else more closely defines the term “YouTube Celebrity” than LonelyGirl15 (aka Jessica Lee Rose)?  She practically invented it last fall when her entire act was revealed as a farce.  The cute little girl who wasn’t actually from New Zealand was just another struggling actress trying to become a star.  It put her on the map as her name and image donned major publications like the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.  It could be argued, in fact, that LonelyGirl15 is the Michael Jordan of YouTube.  What does that mean, exactly?  I have no idea.  But somehow, strangely, it makes sense.

Well, she has been on numerous magazine covers already and got an agent at CAA, but this is her first role in a traditional movie - I Know Who Killed Me - opposite Lindsay Lohan. So is the Internet the new breeding ground for Hollywood stars or is it just another person cashing in on her 15 minutes of fame? I guess we have to stay tuned. By the way, don't miss our upcoming creators roundtable at the Future of Film Conference in Beverly Hills on March 21, 2007, moderated by Steven Starr, CEO, Revver and featuring Ask a Ninja, Sam Has 7 Friends and Cory Tyler of Can We Do That?
