Analysis: Coldplay Compared to NIN and Radiohead

Last week we issued a news release titled Coldplay's Free Single Propels Website to #1 Online Among Bands and Artists. We found that U.S. visits to Coldplay.com increased 19 fold on the back of the band's new single, Violet Hill, being released for free online. On April 29, 2008, the day the single was released on Coldplay.com, the website ranked as the most visited website among the Bands and Artists category. A little more than 1 out of every 40 visits to Bands and Artists category went to Coldplay's website that day.

I'm a regular reader of Billboard and some other music related publications. It's not a fun read these days as total sales continue to fall and music companies alter their models to include every revenue source they can find. A smart move of course, but what really needs to happen for the music industry to prosper?

A report from Forrester this month, Few iPod Owners Are Big iTunes Buyers looks at the number of iTunes tracks sold per iPod shipped, with the key takeaway that "digital music is a tough market - even for the clear leader" (capitalization removed).

MediaReady Introduces $899 Digital Home Media Center

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. - MediaReady on Wednesday introduced its MediaReady MC digital home media center, which combines digital video recording, an electronic program guide, Internet browsing, e-mail, CD and DVD playback, and access to digital pictures and music. The $899 base model features a 200GB hard drive, and will ship to retailers in the first quarter of 2007.

Copyright Office Names New Exemptions to Anti-Circumvention Law

Washington - The Library of Congress has approved six new exemptions to a section of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that prohibits the circumvention of copyright locks on digital devices.

MPAA Sues Firm That Rips CDs, DVDs to Portable Media Players

San Francisco - The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has sued Load 'N Go, a retailer of portable media players that offers to transfer users' CDs and DVDs to the devices, on copyright-related charges, CNET News.com reported.

Clothing Retailer Nordstrom Adds Music Sales In-Store, Online

Seattle - Fashion specialty retailer Nordstrom announced on Monday that it will begin selling CDs in its stores and from its website.

The move follows the success of Starbucks' push into music retail and several exclusive top-selling albums. The new music sections at Nordstrom stores will launch with two exclusives -- an out-of-print Marvin Gaye "Anthology," and "An Introduction to Jamie Cullum" -- and also feature new rock and pop artists, as well as children's titles.

EMI Chairman Levy: "The CD as it is Right Now is Dead"

London - Alain Levy, the chairman and CEO of major record label EMI Music, made the comment before an audience at the London Business School this week, MarketWatch.com reported.

"You're not going to offer your mother-in-law iTunes downloads for Christmas," Levy added. "But we have to be much more innovative in the way we sell physical content...By the beginning of next year, none of our content will come without any additional material." Levy stated that 60% of consumers now rip CDs to their computers for transfer to portable devices.

Sonic Solutions Disc Burning Software to Ship with Windows Vista

Webster, Mass. - VenMill Industries, a provider of disc repair and maintenance products, announced that it has opened a new consumer electronics division geared to offer the same functionality as its commercial machines to the consumer market. The products will fix scratched HD DVDs, DVDs, CDs and video game discs.

Aladdin Patent Application Details CD with Embedded Smart Card Chip

London - NewScientist.com reported on Thursday that a company has filed a patent application for an optical disc that contains an embedded electronic smart card chip, whose applications could include copyright protection of media. The "XCD," developed by Aladdin, is an irregularly-shaped disc that contains a smart card which can be connected to a USB port, so that encrypted media on the disc could potentially only be accessed by confirming a license via USB.

Amazon's CustomFlix Launches CD on Demand Service for Indie Musicians

Santa Cruz, Calif. - CustomFlix, a unit of Amazon.com that provides on-demand distribution of CDs and DVDs, announced on Tuesday the launch of a new CD on Demand service for independent musicians and record labels. CustomFlix will manufacture and ship CDs as customers place orders from either CustomFlix or Amazon.com. Santa Cruz, Calif.-based CustomFlix recently launched a similar DVD on Demand service for independent filmmakers.

SellaBand Debuts New Online Distribution Model for Developing Artists

Amsterdam - SellaBand on Wednesday announced the launch of its community music site that offers a new distribution model for developing artists. The site lets bands upload their self-recorded songs, and "Believers" in the online community can purchase "Parts" of the band in $10 increments.

Los Angeles - The Los Angeles Times on Tuesday reported on IMedia, a Santa Monica, Calif.-based firm that has partnered with a number of major newspapers to distribute CD-ROM discs filled with movie trailers, music, video games, celebrity interviews and other content inside Sunday editions.

CD Ripping Service Riptopia Acquires Rival RipDigital

Washington - Riptopia, a provider of a service that lets consumers bring or mail in their CDs and have them ripped to a hard drive, announced on Thursday that it has acquired fellow CD ripping service RipDigital. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition will expand Riptopia's retail presence with the addition of 208 locations in 28 states; consumers can also bring their CDs in to Riptopia locations within Tweeter, Best Buy, B&H, J&R and Tekserve retail stores. Washington-based Riptopia has partnered with Gracenote and Muze to provide metadata on CD tracks being ripped to digital formats including MP3, WMA and FLAC. After the transaction closes, RipDigital CEO and founder Richard Adams will become vice president of business development at Riptopia, which aims to create a national market for its service.
