Barnes & Noble Names Digital Head as New CEO

New York - Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) announced on Thursday that CEO Steve Riggio will step down, to be replaced in the role by current BN.com president William Lynch. The company also promoted COO Mitchell Klipper to CEO of its retail store group. Riggio will remain vice chairman of the company. New chief executive Lynch joined Barnes & Noble last year from HSN.com, and before that was CEO of IAC's Gifts.com.

Amazon Releases Kindle for Mac Application

Seattle - Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) on Thursday introduced a new free application that will allow Mac owners to browse and purchase e-books from its Kindle Store. The Kindle for Mac application follows a Kindle app for Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone; Amazon is also preparing to offer a Kindle application for the company's forthcoming iPad.

New York - Publisher Random House has established a department that will create original stories for video games, as well as consult on games in development, The Wall Street Journal reported. The publisher has already begun soliciting buyers for two original projects, and also partnered with game developer Stardock on its forthcoming title, "Elemental: War of Magic." "We need new revenue streams," Gina Centrello, publisher of the Random House Publishing Group, told The Journal.

Publisher Macmillan Plans Edit-friendly Interactive Textbooks

New York - Publishing house Macmillan on Monday introduced DynamicBooks, a new interactive textbook platform that will allow professors and others to edit and customize the digital texts, The New York Times reported. The DynamicBooks platform will launch in August with around 100 titles, to be made available for purchase at DynamicBooks.com, as well as through college bookstores via CourseSmart. The cheaper digital textbooks will be readable on a computer or iPhone; Macmillan plans to expand to Apple's iPad as well.

Author Solutions to Distribute Self-Published Titles on Scribd

Bloomington, Ind. - Author Solutions, the provider of a self-publishing service for authors, announced on Friday that it has partnered with online publishing service Scribd for distribution. Under the deal, all new Author Solutions titles published through its AuthorHouse, iUniverse, Trafford Publishing and Xlibris imprints -- as well as a portion of the company's backlist of more than 120,000 titles -- will be made available for purchase through Scribd. While authors may set their own prices, a default price of $9.99 will be set and authors will receive 50% of net sales through Scribd.

Seattle - Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) on Thursday introduced a new Kindle e-book reader application for Research in Motion's (NASD: RIMM) BlackBerry smartphones. The free application will give BlackBerry owners on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and other carriers direct access to the Kindle store and 420,000 e-book titles. Amazon released a Kindle application for Apple's iPhone last March.

Washington - Google (NASD: GOOG) has filed a rebuttal to the U.S. Department of Justice's objections to a settlement over Google's plans to create a digital index of the world's books, setting the stage for a face-off between the two sides in court later this month. The Justice Dept. raised objections to the first version of the settlement agreement between Google and authors and publishers, and reiterated similar objections to the revised settlement that Google submitted to the court in November.

Barnes & Noble Replenishes Nook E-book Reader Supply

New York - Bookseller Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) announced on Monday that its Nook e-book reader device is now in stock at its online store, and will be rolling out in the majority of its retail stores later this week. The company, which ran out of Nook inventory for the year before Thanksgiving last year, noted that it "quickly sold out of nook stock online over the holidays due to unprecedented customer demand," but has since "ramped up production."

Hachette Joins Macmillan in Seeking Variable E-book Pricing

New York - A second large publishing house has joined Macmillan in seeking a variable pricing model for e-books, challenging Amazon.com's bid to set an industry standard price of $9.99 for e-books, The Wall Street Journal reported. Lagardere's Hachette Book Group said in a letter to book agents that it would seek a pricing formula from all retailers like the one that Apple has proposed, where publishers could set prices ranging up to $14.99 for some titles.

New York - The U.S. Justice Department has voiced its objection to the revised settlement between Google (NASD: GOOG) and authors over the Internet giant's plans to create a digital index of the world's books. While the Justice Dept. appreciated the "substantial progress" made between the two sides since it objected to the first version of the settlement submitted in September, it said this week that "class certification, copyright, and antitrust issues remain" with the revised settlement deal.
