Los Angeles - A copy of Academy Award-nominated movie "Avatar" has been uploaded to file-sharing networks, TorrentFreak reported. Nominees were announced earlier this week, and one of the "screener" DVDs typically sent to Academy members who vote on the Oscars is thought to have been posted online.

Aussie Court: ISPs Not Liable for Users' Copyright Infringement

Sydney - A federal judge in Australia has ruled that Internet service providers cannot be held liable for copyright infringements committed by their subscribers, dealing a blow in a closely-watched lawsuit filed by U.S. movie studios against Aussie ISP iiNet, according to published reports. Justice Dennis Conroy found that, while it was shown that iiNet had knowledge that its customers were committing copyright infringement, this knowledge did not equate to "authorizing" the activities.

Los Angeles - Time Warner's (NYSE: TWX) HBO has announced plans to develop a series about "a powerful female online showbiz journalist with a no-holds barred style," leading many to speculate the subject is Nikki Finke, the one-time LA Weekly columnist who started her own successful blog before being hired by Mail.com Media Corp. to run Deadline.com. Gawker contacted Finke for comment, who said she would be posting on the news on her own site shortly. The Hollywood Reporter, meanwhile, said HBO did not obtain Finke's life rights before moving forward with the project, and does not plan to work with her on the show.

H.264 Video Codec to Remain Free to Websites Through 2015

Los Angeles - The widely-used H.264 video codec will remain free to utilize by Web publishers through at least 2015, following a five-year extension of the freebie by the licensing group MPEG LA, CNET News.com reported. The current policy dictated that websites like YouTube could offer video encoded using the format without having to pay the patent holders license fees, so long as the video itself was free to viewers.

Epix Movie Channel Signs Carriage Deal With Charter

London - Sony (NYSE: SNE) Computer Entertainment has released a new application that will provide live streaming video of English Premier League football team Arsenal to PSP handheld game devices, The Register reported. The Arsenal TV Matchday application, set to become available for download in coming weeks, will let fans attending games at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium watch goal replays during matches. Video will be delivered over a secure Wi-Fi network within the stadium.

San Bruno, Calif. - Google's (NASD: GOOG) YouTube has posted its video interview with President Barack Obama, taking questions submitted by YouTube users after his State of the Union address last week. YouTube said over 11,000 questions for Obama were submitted, and it received over 55,000 votes on which questions its users wanted posed to the president. "We hope this interview brings us one step closer to creating better access to your government through YouTube," Steve Grove, YouTube's head of news and politics, wrote on the company's blog. "We had many more questions on hand than we had time to deliver, so we're pleased that the White House has agreed to respond to more of the top-voted questions in their blog soon, at whitehouse.gov."

New York - Newsgathering agency Reuters announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with News Distribution Network on a video news platform for U.S. newspapers, magazines and radio stations. The service will deliver licensed news video from partners including CBS News and E! Entertainment to Reuters customers at no extra charge. Revenue from advertising will be shared between Reuters, NDN and the content providers.

Open Mobile Video Coalition to Study Mobile TV Viewing

Washington - The Open Mobile Video Coalition, a trade group looking to accelerate adoption of over-the-air mobile TV, announced on Wednesday that it has partnered with Harris Interactive and Rentrak to measure consumer viewing habits with mobile TV. During a consumer test in Washington, D.C., viewers will be able to receive up to 20 channels of free mobile TV from eight local area stations. OMVC will work with Harris and Rentrak over the spring and summer to measure viewing patterns.

Univision Launches YouTube Channel
