Indie Label Collective Merlin Signs MySpace Music Deal

Los Angeles - MySpace Music, the joint venture between the News Corp.-owned (NYSE: NWS) social network and the major record labels, on Monday announced a global licensing agreement with Merlin, which represents independent labels accounting for 10% of global music sales. The parties did not say whether Merlin received any equity stake in MySpace Music, although Merlin did note that they have agreed on an "indie participation plan" for Merlin labels and artists, representing "an opportunity to participate in and benefit from the financial growth of MySpace Music with very minimal threshold qualifications."

Among the first Azuki-designed mobile sites for Sony artists is a new official Michael Jackson mobile site, which features news, photos and streaming access to a number of music videos.

Universal Music Taps TuneCore for Branded A&R Portals

New York - Major record label Universal Music Group on Wednesday announced a deal with TuneCore, a provider of flat-fee digital music distribution for artists to services like iTunes and eMusic, to create Universal-branded portals where unsigned artists can have their music heard by A&R executives from Universal labels. Three such branded sites have been created, for Interscope Geffen A&M, Island Def Jam and Universal Motown. In addition to distribution to iTunes via TuneCore, artists submitting through the Universal-branded sites will receive "potential access to such coveted major label services as worldwide distribution and marketing."

Sony to Offer "Meatballs" on Web TV Before DVD Release

Los Angeles - Sony (NYSE: SNE) plans to make its animated film "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" available via Internet-connected televisions and Blu-ray players ahead of its physical DVD release date, The New York Times reports. The price tag for the advanced screening, available from Dec. 8 through Jan. 4, is $24.95, which Sony told The Times was "high enough not to alienate retailers."

Ticketing Firm CTS Eventim Partners with iTunes Store

Hamburg, Germany - CTS Eventim, a Germany-based online ticketing company, has partnered with Apple's iTunes Store to market its concerts to iTunes Store customers, Billboard reports. Under the deal, iTunes customers will receive access to Eventim concert pre-orders before the general sale date, while Eventim.de will provide concert promoters with iTunes-related marketing opportunities.

Brisbane, Calif. - Walmart.com (NYSE: WMT) is now offering a $10 price tag and free home delivery on its top ten pre-order DVD and Blu-ray movie titles. Titles available through the offer include "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," "Star Trek" and "Julie and Julia." The DVD promotion comes as Walmart.com is engaged in a price-cutting war with Amazon and Target.

Los Angeles - Nokia (NYSE: NOK) on Thursday announced a promotional partnership with Island Def Jam Music Group and Universal Music Group International, which will exclusively premiere tracks from Rihanna's forthcoming album with Nokia. The deal includes an exclusive, live streamed concert on Nokia websites. Additionally, Comes With Music customers will receive a version of the album with a bonus track and other additional content, while the Ovi Store will offer a Rihanna application with exclusive content.

Report: Digital Out-of-Home Ad Revenues to Hit $3.7B in 2013

Los Angeles - Viacom's (NYSE: VIA) Paramount Digital Entertainment on Tuesday announced the exclusive premiere on MySpace (NYSE: NWS) of its original supernatural thriller webisode series, "Circle of Eight." Produce in association with Mountain Dew's Green Label Studios, the 10-part series combines elements of gaming and social media to propel the story. Following the end of its exclusive run on MySpace in December, the series will be made available for rent from Blockbuster (NYSE: BBI).
