Indie Label Collective Merlin Signs MySpace Music Deal

Los Angeles - MySpace Music, the joint venture between the News Corp.-owned (NYSE: NWS) social network and the major record labels, on Monday announced a global licensing agreement with Merlin, which represents independent labels accounting for 10% of global music sales. The parties did not say whether Merlin received any equity stake in MySpace Music, although Merlin did note that they have agreed on an "indie participation plan" for Merlin labels and artists, representing "an opportunity to participate in and benefit from the financial growth of MySpace Music with very minimal threshold qualifications."

MySpace to Acquire imeem Music Streaming Service

Los Angeles - News Corp.'s (NYSE: NWS) MySpace has agreed to acquire streaming music service imeem for an undisclosed sum, although sources told CNET News.com that the deal is valued at about $8 million. The deal reportedly includes a payment of $1 million in cash, as well as earn outs and accounts receivable.

Last.fm Gets 1 Million New Users via Xbox Live Integration

New York - Last.fm, the music streaming service owned by CBS (NYSE: CBS), said on Tuesday that its integration with Microsoft's (NASD: MSFT) Xbox Live online game service has resulted in nearly 1 million new registrants in the U.S. and U.K. over the past week. The company said it created more new user profiles during the first 24 hours of Xbox Live integration than at any other time in the service's history. The company added that Xbox Live users have streamed over 120 million minutes of music via Last.fm in the first week.

Shazam Debuts (RED) Special Edition Music ID Application

London - Shazam, a provider of mobile music identification services, on Tuesday debuted the Shazam (RED) application on Apple's App Store, 20% of the $4.99 purchase price of which will go towards the organization fighting HIV and AIDS in Africa. Shazam counts over 10 million iPhone and iPod touch users worldwide.

Live Nation to Sell Live Concert Recordings, Videos on iTunes

Los Angeles - Concert promoter and venue owner Live Nation (NYSE: LYV) announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iTunes Store on a new live music program, that will see Live Nation Studios offer exclusive recorded and filmed concerts for purchase and download on iTunes.

MOG to Launch Music Subscription Service Next Week

Berkeley, Calif. - MOG, a network of user-created music blogs that counts 10 million monthly visitors, said on Monday that it will launch its previously announced subscription-based music streaming service on Wednesday, Dec. 2. The unlimited streaming service, which has secured licensing from all four major record labels, will cost $5 per month.

Report: Million Spotify Streams Earn Lady Gaga Just $167

Los Angeles - Despite racking up more than a million streams in Sweden during a five month period on ad-supported streaming service Spotify, artist Lady Gaga's song "Poker Face" generated a songwriting royalty payment of just $167 from Swedish performing rights society STIM, TorrentFreak reported, citing the local Swedish outlet Expressen.

Washington - Jonathan Potter has resigned as executive director of the Digital Media Association (DiMA), a trade group representing the interests of larger webcasters and technology firms that he founded in 1998. "I am grateful to DiMA's member companies for allowing me to serve them -- and their innovative technologies and services and their passionate people -- for so long and in so many exciting ways. I hope that my next adventure is as challenging and rewarding," said Potter. DiMA general counsel Lee Knife will serve as interim executive director while the organization searches for a replacement.

Report: U.S. Labels Concerned on Spotify Premium Conversions

London - The major record labels are reportedly concerned about the percentage of U.S. users likely to pay for ad-supported streaming music service Spotify's for-pay premium version, the Financial Times reported. Spotify, which is available in several European countries, had planned to launch in the U.S. in the fall, but recently said it would delay the launch to 2010. "We think Spotify is a great service but they're going to have to convince us they can convert enough people from free to paid subscriptions to make it worth our while," one label executive told FT.

BBC to Launch All-U.K. Radio Station Streamer Next Year

London - The BBC announced on Thursday that it has partnered with a number of U.K. radio broadcasters to launch an online radio player application that includes streams from every licensed station in the U.K. Set to launch early next year, the UK Radioplayer will offered live and on-demand content from more than 400 stations. Partners in the venture include RadioCentre, Global Radio and Guardian Media Group.

New York - Vevo, the music video joint venture between Sony Music and Universal Music that will use technology from Google's (NASD: GOOG) YouTube, is set to launch on Dec. 8, the company announced via its Twitter feed. The labels hope the standalone site will help them further monetize their music videos -- which are the most-watched content on all of YouTube.

New York - Universal Music Group on Wednesday announced a deal to provide free, legal downloads to Guvera, an Australia-based, ad-supported download site that plans to launch in the U.S. in February. Launched in 2008, Guvera asks users to fill out demographic profiles and brand preferences, and in turn receive free downloads accompanied by targeted advertisements.

RealNetworks to Power Mobile Music for France's SFR

Los Angeles - Several Hollywood movie studios have filed suit against a Swedish ISP that is hosting OpenBitTorrent, an independent BitTorrent file-sharing tracker site that was launched in the wake of the The Pirate Bay's announced sale to Global Gaming Factory, TorrentFreak reported. The studios sued hosting provider Portlane, demanding that it shutter the OpenBitTorrent website.

Stockholm, Sweden - Marking "the end of an era," the operators of file-sharing hub The Pirate Bay on Tuesday shut down their BitTorrent tracker, which grew over six years to become the largest hub for finding copyrighted materials for download in the world, TorrentFreak reported. "Now that the decentralized system for finding peers is so well developed, TPB has decided that there is no need to run a tracker anymore, so it will remain down! It's the end of an era, but the era is no longer up2date," the Pirate Bay wrote on its blog. "We have put a server in a museum already, and now the tracking can be put there as well."
