Report: U.S. Video Game Sales Down 15% in February

Port Washington, N.Y. - U.S. video game sales were down 15% in February, the second straight month of decline, to $1.26 billion, according to sales data compiled by market research firm NPD Group. "Honestly, I had expected the industry to perform somewhat better this month," remarked NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "Nonetheless, strong new releases, and Easter gift-buying bodes well for industry performance in March."

Motorola Makes Bing Default Search on Android Phones in China

New York - Motorola (NYSE: MOT) plans to add Microsoft's (NASD: MSFT) Bing search engine as the default on the Android-based phones it sells in China, replacing Android developer Google's (NASD: GOOG) own search engine, The Wall Street Journal reported. The Journal speculated that the move could foresee a time when Google may potentially remove itself completely from China, as it threatened to do in the wake of the hacker attacks on its Gmail service that reportedly emanated from China.

Redmond, Wash. - Responding to criticism, Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) has changed a controversial policy on its Xbox Live online game service that prevented users from signing up for Gamertags that expressed their sexual orientation. San Francisco - Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) and Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) have announced a patent cross-licensing agreement, covering the Kindle e-book reader and Linux-based servers used by Amazon. The deal includes payment of an undisclosed sum to Microsoft by Amazon. "Microsoft's patent portfolio is the largest and strongest in the software industry, and this agreement demonstrates our mutual respect for intellectual property as well as our ability to reach pragmatic solutions to IP issues regardless of whether proprietary or open source software is involved," said Microsoft deputy general counsel Horacio Gutierrez.

Yahoo, Microsoft Get Regulatory Approval for Search Alliance

Report: Google Search Share Down, Bing Up in January

Reston, Va. - The monthly analysis of the U.S. search market for January by comScore, the Internet measurement firm, shows that Google accounted for 65.4% of the search market share, down 0.3% for the month. Microsoft's Bing had 11.3% market share, up 0.6 percentage points from December, while Yahoo lost 0.3% share and now holds 17% of the U.S. search market.

Port Washington, N.Y. - U.S. video game sales totaled $1.17 billion in January, down 13% from the same period a year ago during a typically slow month for the industry, according to a report from market research firm NPD Group. Sales of video game hardware fell 21% from last January, to $353.7 million; Nintendo's Wii led with 465,800 in sales, followed by Microsoft's (NASD: MSFT) Xbox 360 (332,800 units) and Sony's (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation 3 (276,900 units).

Microsoft to End Xbox Live Support for Original Xbox

Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) announced on Friday that, as of April 15, its Xbox Live online game service will no longer support its original Xbox console, which first went on sale back in 2002. "We did not make this decision lightly, but after careful consideration and review we realize that this decision will allow us unprecedented flexibility for future features," the company said. The company has sold a total of over 24 million units of the original Xbox, which was discontinued in 2006.

Microsoft to Offer 250GB Xbox 360 Drive Add-on in Japan

Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft plans to release a 250B hard drive accessory for the Xbox 360 next month in Japan, IDG News Service reported. The company told IDG it currently has no plans for the add-on device outside of Japan, where it will sell for about $172 from March 11. The largest on-board drive currently available for the Xbox 360 is 120GB on the Xbox 360 Elite.

New York - Facebook has ceased using Microsoft's (NASD: MSFT) services to sell display advertising in some international markets, and may do the same in the U.S., Robin Domeniconi, Microsoft's VP of U.S. ad sales, told BusinessWeek. "We are in discussions with them on adjusting it or changing it as we go forward," Keith Lorizio, another Microsoft VP, said of the companies agreement. "They have a desire to sell their own advertising."
