Activist Investor Icahn Launches Takeover Bid for Lionsgate

New York - Activist investor Carl Icahn, who recently made a bid to increase his stake in film studio Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF) from 18.9% to 30%, on Friday expanded his bid to include all outstanding shares he does not already own. The offer price remains $6 per share in cash for Lionsgate shares that would increase Icahn's stake to at least 50.1%. Icahn has previously used his wealth in part to look to acquire large enough stakes in companies, such as Yahoo, Take-Two and Blockbuster, so as to control board seats, and effect some form of change at these companies.

MPAA, Bollywood Studios Join Forces to Fight Film Piracy

Mumbai, India - The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) announced this week that it has partnered with seven Bollywood film studios to address movie piracy in India, the Associated Press reported.

Viacom, Google Filings Unveiled in $1 Billion Copyright Lawsuit

Los Angeles - Google (NASD: GOOG) and Viacom (NYSE: VIA) have submitted motions for summary judgment in the $1 billion copyright infringement suit Viacom filed three years ago against YouTube. Both companies' filings included potentially damaging details on the other's actions, with YouTube employees accused of uploading copyrighted clips, and Viacom taking pains to mask its own uploading of clips to the site.

American Film Institute to Shutter Digital Content Lab

Los Angeles - The American Film Institute (AFI) will shutter its Digital Content Lab, a workshop where video producers explored interactive television and other emerging technologies, due to a lack of funding, NewTeeVee reported. AFI will still produce its upcoming DigiFest in November, and hopes to resurrect the Digital Content Lab in another form sometime in the future.

Studios, Cable Co.'s Launch $30M Movies on Demand Promotion

Los Gatos, Calif. - Online DVD rental service Netflix (NASD: NFLX) has settled a lawsuit related to the disclosure of customer data for its Netflix Prize contest for developers, and announced that it will abandon plans to host a sequel to the contest. The first contest awarded $1 million to developers who were able to improve the accuracy of Netflix's movie recommendations feature by 10%.

Fandango Pilots Mobile Barcode Advance Movie Ticket Sales

Las Vegas - Fandango, a provider of online movie showtimes and advance ticket sales, on Monday launched a new mobile ticket program in eight U.S. markets. The program will allow moviegoers to purchase tickets from their phones, and present a mobile barcode to theater ticket-takers to gain entry. Fandango said the program will first be offered to more than 100 screens in the Reading Cinemas circuit.

Duluth, Ga. - Video rental giant Blockbuster's (NYSE: BBI) partner for DVD rental kiosks, NCR (NYSE: NCR), has launched a new feature that lets customers rent DVDs online at BlockbusterExpress.com, and pick them up from local kiosks. The new rent online features lets customers create a favorites list, browse available titles at their preferred kiosks, and complete the rental of up to three titles at once.

New York - The Tribeca Film Festival, co-founded by Robert De Niro, has announced plans to offer a virtual festival pass that will let cineastes view at least eight of the features premiering at the fest, as well as participate in Q&A sessions with filmmakers. The $45 price tag for the Virtual Premium pass compares with a festival pass that ranges from $250 to $450.

Sony PlayStation Network Gets HD Films From 6 Major Studios

Foster City, Calif. - Sony Computer Entertainment America (NYSE: SNE) said on Tuesday that its PlayStation Network online service for the PlayStation 3 is now the first such service to offer HD movies from all six major Hollywood movie studios for purchase and rental. Following a U.S.-only launch, the films from Fox, Disney, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal and Warner Bros. are also expected to soon become available to PlayStation Network users in the U.K., France, Germany and Spain.

Los Angeles - Among Oscar contenders for Best Picture, "District 9" is the most-popular film on BitTorrent file-sharing networks, having racked up 12.6 million downloads to date, according to a survey of trackers compiled by TorrentFreak. "Avatar" was second with 11.3 million downloads, followed by "The Hurt Locker" (7.9 million); "Up" (5.4 million); "Inglorious Basterds" (5.38 million); "Precious" (4.9 million); "Up in the Air" (4.86 million); "A Serious Man" (3.8 million); "The Blind Side" (1.85 million); and "An Education" (683,000 downloads).

RealNetworks Drops RealDVD Appeal; Will Pay Studios $4.5M

Seattle - RealNetworks (NASD: RNWK) announced late Wednesday that it has dropped its appeal of a federal court ruling that found its DVD-copying RealDVD software infringed copyrights, and has agreed to pay the movie studios that sued the company $4.5 million to cover legal fees. Seattle-based RealNetworks, which first introduced the RealDVD software in September 2008, also agreed to an injunction against further distribution or support of RealDVD.

CNET: Apple, Studios in Talks on Cloud-based iTunes Video

Sony, CBS Team on 3D Consumer Research Facility in Vegas

Las Vegas - Sony (NYSE: SNE) Electronics and CBS (NYSE: CBS) have partnered to establish a new 3D consumer research center and screening facility. The Sony 3D Experience will be located within the CBS Television City research facility within the MGM Grand casino in Las Vegas. The facility will showcase both 3D movies, and home televisions, game consoles and Blu-ray players that support 3D.
