Thomas produces and devises content strategiesfor film, television and new media in the U.S. and Europe. He’s consultedamongst others for Talpa Content USA, PBS-Now, MSN Germany, Treehugger, DDB Juniper Group and E! Networks. He co-founded GoGooroo.com, an Internet televisioncommunity with the goal of bringing order to the wonderful chaos of Internetvideo.
In 2007, Thomas accepted the position of Executive VicePresident for News and Entertainment at Internet start-up Nixle.com, launching in the fall of 2008.
Thomas currently also oversees the re-launch of documentary.org as a video-drivenonline community, writes columns for Handelsblatt.com and the new media blog BroadbandJungle Blog, and participates as an industry mentor at the American FilmInstitute’s Digital Content Lab.
A native ofGraz, Austria, Thomas Rigler studied directing and screenwriting at the NationalFilm School inVienna. After making the rounds at film festivals with a dramatic shortentitled “The Pump Attendant,” he relocated to Los Angeles in 1992. It was love at firstsight and has been his home ever since.
His firstAmerican project explored the theme of relocation. The documentary “GlenalbynDrive,” tracked thejourney of renowned Austrian painter Hubert Schmalix, who had found a new lifein Los Angeles.
For Thomas,too, Los Angeles was bursting with diverse opportunities for creativity. Andso, during the rest of the 1990’s he worked in film, fashion, music, and eveneducation and produced documentaries, music videos, and photo shoots.
In 2000,Thomas accepted a staff position at E! Networks as a writer-producer. Over the nextfour years, he produced and directed more than 30 half-hour shows for E!, from“making of’s” to celebrity travel programs. He also had a blast producing anddirecting “Infamous,” E!’s ambitious 13-episode take on a true-crime franchise with scriptedre-enactments shot cinema-verité style in the studio and on location.
In 2003 and2004, diverse projects included directing a documentary about the FreiburgTheater andprofiling the Los Angeles theater scene for German television pubcasters ZDF/3sat. Stateside, he produced andco-directed an HDTV special on the home entertainment landscape for CNET.com and Fine Living.
He alsowrote and directed several well-received network promos for Food Network and Fine Living, which featuredMaster Sommelier Andrea Immer. He even hosted “Hollywood Talks Shop,” a popular and frequently sold-outseries of live Q&A events at the Goethe Institut, in which he welcomed suchvenerable filmmakers as Roland Emmerich, Wim Wenders, and Hans Zimmer.
In 2005-06, Thomas served as the Executive Producer for NewMedia content at both E! and style networks. Brought in as the creative engine for the broadband,wireless and VOD platforms, he oversaw the production team that launched “TheVine @ eonline,”one of the first broadband players run by a US cable network, producing over600 segments in the process.
